Giant Pandas at the Memphis Zoo

The zoo in Memphis, Tennessee, is one of four zoos in the USA that has Giant Pandas. Their research program is focused on nutrition. Collaborating scientists are studying which species of bamboo the bears prefer, what times of year they eat them, how best to serve up that bamboo in captivity, how much energy they get from the bamboo, and how panda foraging behavior can affect the growth of wild bamboo.

Tests suggest miscarriage for Memphis Zoo panda Ya Ya
By Linda A. Moore
Posted March 2, 2010 at 9:57 a.m.
Sadly, the Memphis Zoo will not be welcoming a panda cub this month.
An ultrasound performed this morning revealed that Ya Ya, the female giant panda, is not pregnant.
Tests performed last week showed a tiny fetus and a flicker of a heartbeat, but today the fetal sack was empty, indicating a miscarriage.
Because of panda physiology, it’s difficult to tell if a bear is expecting until late in the pregnancy. Had Ya Ya been pregnant, the cub would have been born in a few weeks.
Ya Ya was inseminated on Thanksgiving in a third attempt to impregnate her.
Pandas are only fertile a few days each year, so it will be next fall before they’ll try again.

awww, I was so hoping Ya Ya would have one this year. I wonder what happened to make her miscarry? when you consider that Bai Yun has had 5 cubs and Lun Lun 2 and even Mei Xiang has had one, poor Ya Ya can't seem to have even one
