Quote by: jkrThanks for watching and posting today Velma. Glad to see they got a nice fish today. There doesn't seem to be a shortage of food at this nest which is nice to see.
4:34 pm
Mom on the lookout.
One chick preens while the other sleeps.
Spoke too soon. Now both have decided to sleep except that the chick on the left likes to sleep with one eye open in case he misses something.
There is, from my observations....a fish supply shortage at this nest. I screen taped and watched this nest for two hours last night. Very hard to observe, and very difficult to use that much time on one nest, unless I believed there was an issue....and we know there is .
I believe the "lost" nestling died of dehydration.
Osprey nestlings get all their fluids from their food....food shortage = fluid shortage = dehydration. As we know, life can go on longer without food than without water...when food is the only source of fluids...
This female doesn't shade the nestlings, from my observations of this nest, this adds to the dehydration. Osprey nestlings need shade from the female...you know.. the "umbrella".
Ospreys are in the open....no cover from the weather or predators. There also seems to be an issue with insects, also adding stress to the nest.
Looking forward to comments on this nests from others observing.

Jazzel, there's no shortage of food in the Kootenay River. It's a fantastic fishing river with bull, rainbow and cutthroat trout as well as Kokanee ( a land locked salmon). I've fished in it myself.
But it's possible Dad isn't as good at hunting as the males at other nests, although, the Calgary osprey don't seem to bring in a lot of fish per day either.
I'm not sure how many fish they need each day to survive but it is always a worry when they don't get fed for hours at a time.
5:57 pm
Mom flew off.
6:18 pm
Oldest chick wingercizes. Lots of quick flapping but not so much into the jumping yet.

6:23 pm
Backs up to the side of the nest for a poopshoot.

Currently it's 19C (66F) which is nice and cool.
