What Happened Last Year?

In spring 2009 we installed a webcam aimed at an osprey nest at the Creston Valley Wildlife Management Area. The ospreys returned and eventually two eggs were laid. About a week before we started streaming live images of the eggs hatching and then the chicks, one egg was gone. A few days later the second - and last remaining - egg was gone along with our plans for an educational and fascinating osprey webcam from the Creston Valley.

We don't know exactly what happened to the eggs but if the ospreys left the eggs unattended for long periods, there are a host of animals that would be more than happy to relieve them of the burden of incubation. This is where the male osprey is especially important -- while both parents can incubate, the female does it the most, while the male mostly brings food and makes sure predators stay clear.

During the day, birds like crows, vultures, and even bald eagles would go after the eggs or chicks if they were left unattended. During the evening, nocturnal great horned owls pose a very real danger -- not only to the eggs and chicks, but in rare occasions, to the female herself.

Last egg hatched June 16th -- camera didn't come live until after the eggs hatched.
There were 3 chicks. One disappeared from the nest without witnesses to see what happened to it.

Jazzel and soph you beat me to it. I've been waiting for this cam to come live.
It's in my old home town and within 80 miles of where I'm now living :nod:

I'm not sure if they're having problems with the cam feed or if it's my connection but the feed keeps sputtering.

I don't like seeing all the twine on the nest but it is near a vast agriculture area so I'm sure there's bound to be some in every nest.


If you look far in the distance to where the fields turn to blue that's the start of Duck Lake and Kootenay Lake.
The Kootenay River flows through the area of all those fields after it's return to Canada from the USA

Adult begins calling and seems agitated.

Second adult (Dad?) arrives.

All three chicks are near the right-hand side of the camera being fed. Neither adult is within view but from the actions I'd think Dad had brought in a fish and left again.

I'm really impressed with the quality of the picture on this camera. I hope they have the ability to back it off a bit as the chicks get older.

After much calling from Mom, Dad brings in a fish.
All three O's are up immediately for their dinner.

she sounds as though she is sending out an alarm....quiet now....gonna make a video so I have an adult O's chirping call on file!
