June 17 8:00pm

Nothing has changed. Every time I've checked the eggs are just sitting there in the open. Mom usually on the perch. At dusk, Dad arrives and settles down to brood and Mom stays on the perch. Only two eggs have been visible for several days. I wonder how the buried two are doing. Might the nesting material be incubating them? I have very little hope for these eggs, and it probably is just as well. Mom's genes do not need to be saved.

I do hear you, BET Nodding - but have also noticed that Moms are more tuned into the timing of the nest. I think she may have realized on some level that this was too late in the season for this to have worked - so she isn't incubating because that's what she does in April and May, and this is June. I know for sure that the Mom on the Oregon eagle nest stopped incubating before the Dad, and while I haven't checked to confirm my memory, I think the same thing happened at the Delta OWL eagle nest last year when it passed the date when the eggs might hatch.

I'm hoping that everyone will have sorted out their territorial issues by next year, and am interested to see how Mom does in a "normal" year. Smile

I did notice something unusual yesterday. Not sure when exactly, but sometime mid-afternoon, Dad brought in a large fish, which Mom promptly grabbed and took to the perch to eat. That's not unusual - but she still had the fish and was working on it a couple of hours later. I think at one point she left with it and returned - and while I didn't see what happened with it at the end (around 5 pm), there was enough left that it seems more likely she dropped it than finished it.

I don't know if it was especially tough or if she wasn't hungry or what - but it seemed a bit strange. Puzzled

I would hope she's just not hungry....she's not doing anything to work up an appetite. She may be over weight, and having problems flying, dropping some weight to be fit for migration??? But, I hope she's not a sick birdDon't Know I'll watch, my internet is still not right...off and onEvil Thanks for watchingWub

Things have been more normal today, Jazzel - and Mom made short work of the one fish I saw delivered today.

I do have a sense that Dad isn't incubating as much, and at one point he put a couple of sticks down partly covering the eggs. They've since been moved to the edge of the nest - but maybe some sort of clock is kicking in for him as well.

(Hmmm - the next step for Dad in a normal year is teaching the chicks to fish [at least according to some experts] - do you suppose he'll give Mom fishing lessons? I think it's been a while since she's needed to catch her own fish. Titter )
