Well it's nesting season out there and that means some of the babies are going to end up in OWL's care. We currently have, and I hope I can remember all of them, 2 Great Horned Owls, 6 Barn Owls and 3 Barred Owls. All of them had fallen out of their nests. We have our resident education birds, Casper and Blinkey (GHO) and Demon (Barred) acting as foster parents. We don't have a suitable Barn Owl to act as a foster, but the babies seem to be doing OK without.
Here is a picture of the Barred Owls taken when they arrived from Powell River just this morning. I think they are pretty cute!

I don't know if this is really, really cute, or kinda creepy...you decide.



This is a picture of 6 baby Barn Owls that we rescued a couple of weeks ago now. An old farm house was scheduled to be demolished and it was discovered that there was a family of Barn Owls inside. When the wrecking crew showed up the parents took off and abandoned the babies so OWL was called in to pick them up. In the photo they range in age from about 2 days to about 12 days old. They are all doing well now and have been moved into a bigger room, plus 2 more Barny babies (from a different nest) have been added to the nursery!
I don't normally do this but will make an exception this one time...these guys have ravenous appetites, All 8 combined are eating about 25 mice per day and that will only increase as they grow, Plus there are the triplet Barred Owls (who are all doing well and have been moved to a much bigger room that is partly outside, along with their foster Dad Demon) who are now eating 12 mice per day. We currently have about 50 birds in rehab and there's another 40 or so that are the permanent residents. Each mouse costs $1, each rat costs $2 and quail are running $3 each. Times are tough for everyone I know, but instead of buying that lottery ticket (face it, you're not going to win) if you could find it in your heart to send a few dollars to us at OWL it sure would be appreciated. Thanks so very much (there, end of begging).
I'll keep you posted on how everyone is doing and when they will be released.

Judy...The little barn owls are a little creepy and bizarre! :blink: On the other hand they are cute in their own way. I watched a barn owl cam once and the tiniest one reminded me of a skinny naked old man running around it's larger brothers and sisters...now that was wierd!!! Thanks for the post!

Oops, I'm a wee bit tardy in posting here The day we visited OWL's open house was a few days before I left on my cruise and I didn't have time to post any of my pics. birdofprey, your pics taken at OWL are fantastic I'll sort through my pics and post some that are different from the other ones already posted. I took over 2,000 pics on my cruise I'll still be sorting them out a month from now

Oh, come on...how cute is this?



Normally OWL does not deal with ducklings, but how could we turn them away? An RCMP officer found them, being the only 2 survivors after a raccoon attacked the nest and killed the parents and 5 siblings. They arrived under full police escort, complete with lights and siren! We agreed to take them for the day because one of the volunteers who was onsite lives close to Wildlife Rescue which is a rehab centre that does accept little duckies and she would drop them off on her way home. Needless to say they were the star attraction today with all of us going out to play with them whenever we could. Someone even got them a small pool to swim around in. Awwwwwww!
Meanwhile, back to reality. The baby barn owls (8 of them) are doing well; they are now all little fuzz balls and are squawking constantly. Their bellies are distended from all the mice that they eat.
We received yet another baby barny this morning. It came from a nest of 9 and I guess the Mom decided 8 was enough so she kicked the little one out, or maybe she knew something was wrong with him that wasn't obvious to us. He had been down on the ground for a while, so was very cold, not a good thing for one so little. One of the volunteers actually ended up putting him in her bra, since body heat is the best thing in a case like this. Unfortunately it was too late and he passed away.
The baby barred owls (4 of them) are also doing extremely well. When I passed by their cage this morning I just couldn't resist looking in on them. They are now capable of flying up to a perch and 3 of them were up there. For a minute I thought 1 was dead because he was slumped over the perch, sort of hanging from it. I took a closer look and he was breathing so I guess it's a reflex for them to grab on tight to the perch, and this little guy was simply passed out. It sure looked funny though.
As far as I can remember, everyone else is doing OK. We were quite busy today with lots of visitors coming by for a tour. That's the way we like it though.

Aw Judy, the goslings are so cute It reminds me of the time I was at the Victoria Golf Course watching the eagles when a club member saw and heard something in the bushes at the base of the nest tree. It was a gosling, no doubt intended as a meal for the eaglets I was glad to hear him say he would find a box for it and take it home to his wife Your pics and reports on the animals at OWL are very much appreciated
