Just up the hill from the ferry dock on Protection Island, near Nanaimo BC, I heard a big racket in the trees. I looked up and lo and behold - a heron rookery! The chicks were BIG and standing in their nests. Later, while waiting for the ferry home, we saw of flock of parents fly back, probably with dinner.

This is not the finest photo I've ever taken because I only had my cell phone with me which does not have a zoom lens. But you can see a few of the nests and if you look close there is a chick in each one.



Does anyone remember the heron cam that David and Richard set up in Stanley Park, in 2007 I think?

and haven't we gotten rather complacent when we are frustrated that our PHONE!!!! cannot capture great detailed photos of chicks in nests!!! I oft laugh at self over the same thing and have to remind me its A PHONE!!!, AND it does work great as a phone!!! then there are all those other addons, !!

Yes, Dalyce (Raptore) lived nearby and would monitor the rookery and count the nests and chicks. The heron cam was set up on one of the neighboring highrise apartment buildings beside Stanley Park. The suite owner (birdseyeview) used to operate it and zoom in occasionally on a nest and chicks.

jwnix - you are so right about the phones! How dare they not have a zoom lens!

I sent her an email to see what she's up to these days. she and i used to chat about our respective rookeries.

my phone DOES have a zoom on it, and I still get annoyed because of course if i use it, i need to hold really still to attemp to get those chicks!!!!

here 's a nice hummer photo posted in louisiana today....

An almost white bird with a few red gorget feathers showed up in the yard late yesterday. Weather's terrible for trying to photograph birds, but here's one halfway decent pic. He sure brightens things up!
