Hello again Kay: Actually, I prefer Bryce Canyon over the Grand Canyon, although both are excellent. If you are ever back in Vegas, it’s worth the drive. My favorite time for the Grand Canyon is late fall and go to the north rim. It’s always less crowded, and the temps are much cooler because the elevation is higher. Plus, the birches, aspens and maples are changing color. In my opinion, there are more dramatic color changes here then in New England and eastern Canada. Also, as I’ve just learned, this is the best time of year to see the condors. -- Ed First you must follow before you lead. |

Grand Wash Trail, Capitol Reef NP, Utah, 3-18-10. About four miles roundtrip along the wash bottom with sheer-walled canyons. Desert bighorns are supposedly in the area but did not see any. Trail muddy in parts, and do not hike here if big storms are on the way. Easy hike on mostly level terrain. Bring water. First you must follow before you lead. |

Hickman Bridge Trail, Capitol Reef NP, Utah, 3-18-10. About 2 miles roundtrip to the base of Hickman Natural Bridge. Bridge is 125 feet tall with span of 133 feet. Hiked this a few hours after Grand Wash hike. Somewhat more challenging with 400-foot elevation gain and lots of switchbacks. Bring lots of water. First you must follow before you lead. |

Canada Geese mystery, 3-19-10. We were headed to Zion National Park this morning on Utah 24, a few miles south of Interstate 70 when we spotted several Canada geese in a field near Richfield, Utah. One white goose stood out among the Canada geese. We’ve speculated this could have been a snow goose. Tried to find some information on the Internet as to whether this could be a white Canada goose or maybe some sort of an Albino goose. The geese were too far away for a clear photo of whitey. The third photo is zoomed in dramatically so is very grainy. Any ideas as to identity? First you must follow before you lead. |
