Good morning, everyone! According to the early birds on the Maine forum, the little chick has already had two feedings, one at about 5 am, as it was beginning to get light, and another around 5:50 am. Several observers thought they saw Mom turning an egg as well - so we are wondering if we'll see another chick later today.

The animation below was done by Lori of the Maine forum of the second feeding:

Everyone.....the animations, Judy, are great! I cannot say that enough. I hope there is a second. I do have one question, which I think has been discussed. Do we believe this is the same pair from last year? Or have we decided it is a new pair?

I know a number of people have an opinion on that, Carolyn, but where they're not banded, it's not easy to know for sure. There are also some who see traits that remind them of the original pair (from 2006-2007) - and some who think one of the current pair might be an offspring of the original pair. I didn't watch the earliest feedings - but Mom seemed to be doing a good job in the later ones, which might suggest this isn't her first chick. But while I remember the first time parents who had a hard time figuring out how to feed (Smitty/Shep at NCTC, for instance, and a Maine osprey Mom who stood on the edge of the nest reaching out and didn't seem to understand why the just-hatched chick wasn't coming over to eat, and who tipped over the first time she tried to reach down [she did figure it out and became a good mom Smile ]) - I expect some first-time parents figure out what's needed very quickly.

Watching a feeding now, and seeing Mom break off a piece, decide it's too big and swallow it and try again - and once she decided on a size, she's feeding little bites, one after another.
