Bev it looks as if the last egg isn't viable
I wonder how long Phoebe will keep watch on it before she realizes it won't hatch ? Poor thing sure has gone through a terrible time the past while, first losing the last two chicks and now two failed eggs :cry1:

Phoebe is one plucky little bird - that lizard looks a lot bigger than she is!
Does anyone know if any tests were done on the chick that died? I'm wondering if there's either some sort of nutrient shortage in the area or some sort of contamination that's leaching into whatever it is that she eats. (Sorry that I don't know more about hummingbirds - that's not well phrased, but hopefully you know what I'm trying to say.) I remember there was a thought that a lack of protein might have affected the chick's ability to grow feathers - and it would seem possible it might also affect the ability of eggs to develop successfully.
I'm not sure what could be done - but if tests show there is some sort of contaminant in the area, perhaps it could be cleaned up or contained.

I am saddened by this situation as well, but maybe she is just getting too old????

video: Phoebe Abandons Her Nest
A group of neighbors have been watching Phoebe, and one of them recorded the lizard visit so I could make a video. I was hoping to have a good ending--- with Phoebe returning to her nest. But the ending is sad… an empty nest. You’ve probably seen this clip of the lizard on March 16, but I thought I would post it for those who have not.
Do you think Phoebe might later come back to this nest? She has other nests. Maybe she’ll use one of those.

The latest update from Phoebe's Facebook page.
Phoebe Allens has shut her webcam off. She hasn't decided yet if she will return this spring but will update her facebook friends if she does.
I'm going to miss her :cry1:
