For the record....

11:32 pm eastern time

No one home. I've been watching most of the evening, and haven't seen anyone stop by since my previous post.

Judy, what sane eagle would want to rest on that!!!Grin

Umm - this one? (Rolling on floor laughing, BET!)

This is the female - you can see the feather still sticking out on her side.

Both of them were there when I first looked in at 7:40, digging around in the nest cup area where Mom is now settled, then the male moved to the top of the nest and it looked as if he might have hopped up into the branches rather than flown off, though it's hard to tell.

Then the female did a bit more looking around

And then nestled in for almost 10 minutes. She just flew off at 7:55 am

We had a juvie visit the nest for almost an hour around 3 pm today - I have a few pictures and videos I'll add later.

Here's a link to the full report on the Maine forum - http://www.window-on-wildlife.com/index ... 2#msg32762 - and the interesting thing is that one of the adults was on the nest with the juvie for a while! We're wondering if it might be a former offspring - and also wondering if it was Dad with a female juvie, as males generally don't tangle with females.

This is Sherri's s'cap of the adult with the juvie:

And these are my two 7-minute videos of the juvie (the adult had left before I noticed the activity at the nest)

9:47 pm

The female flew into the nest around 9:03 pm, and she's been standing in the nest bowl area since then. She's moved around a few times, and she doesn't look as pouffy as they usually do while laying an egg - but I can't see why she'd be in an uncomfortable position for so long otherwise.

Stay tuned....

10:15 pm
False alarm - she tucked her head under her wing around 10:03, and now appears to be fast asleep, standing in the nest bowl.

Hello JudyB... How amazing that the adult permitted the juvie to hang out in the nest with him. It would so make sense that it was a male adult with a female juvie.... Just curious,,, do you think if it was a female adult and a male juvie that the outcome would have been the same? Still amazing that ANY adult would allow that during nesting season...off-spring or not. Smile

Good question, Judy. It would be the male's job to drive a male intruder away, so a female might not have chased off a male intruder.

However, while neither Sherri nor I saw it, Sherri said someone on UStream Chat thought the adult arrived with food and the juvie took it. If that's true, I don't think a female this close to nesting would give up food, even to a former offspring - I've seen how they grab it away from the male, and suspect they don't share the way they do when they have chicks.

Also, looking at the pictures in Sherri's slideshow on the Maine forum, the juvie generally looks bigger to me, and the adult has the sleek look of the male (and I just realized I forgot to include the link - and have done that now).

We'll probably never know for sure - but it was interesting - and he/she was a handsome young eagle.

Nest is empty this morning - but I do think spending the night means she's getting closer to egg-laying time. Smile

Just checked the Maine forum (http://www.window-on-wildlife.com/index ... 4#msg32844) and she stayed there until dawn. Looking at the overnight pictures of her covered with snow, I'm wondering if part of the reason she spent the night was to keep the nest bowl clear of snow - perhaps because she is planning to use it soon!
