Hi Ed * Thanks for sharing all your great photos from San Juan Island. It is a unique ecosystem and environment out there. You are right about the Northern Harriers. The one that you weren't sure about is a Rough-legged Hawk. Nice capture. The three different foxes that you saw all look very different from one another. The first seems typical, the second was very deep red, and the third was dark and silver. Great shots, especially the very beautiful silver fox with red eyes. It's face looks a bit like a wolf.

Thanks for your comments about my trip to GNP. I will look for that book, and I do hope to get back there next summer, and possibly get up to Waterton. Cheers!

Kay, I’m guessing that the Red Fox with black fur got to within 50 feet of me. It watched me for a bit before moving away. It definitely was one of the highlights of our trip to the island.

Doug, Thanks for identifying the Rough-legged Hawk. This area of the island, with all the prairie grass, is a great hunting ground for the hawks and other wildlife.

Steep Creek Trail, near Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center, Juneau, Alaska, 11-7-11. Arrived in Juneau while on our way to the Alaska Bald Eagle Festival in Haines. The visitor center was closed, but this boardwalk trail was open. Some eagles were visible from the trail. Click to enlarge.

Mendenhall Glacier, 11-7-11. One trail leads toward the glacier, but poor conditions today with slush and ice on trail. Great Blue Heron with glacier in background. Click to enlarge.
