Today was windy and wintry with afternoon squalls of light snow. So I was surprised when I spotted a bald eagle as I looked for signs of animal life in and around Elizabeth Lake. It flew to the far side of the lake near the highway.

As I walked around the lake, there was little sign of any water fowl apart from this trio of mallard ducks.

Although I walked carefully, trying to remain hidden, the eagle flew off in the direction I had come before I got close. As I watched, it alighted on a tree close to where I had been twenty minutes before. By the time I walked back, the eagle had had enough of my Hide and Go Seek, and flew off despite my best attempts to remain inconspicuous. Until the next meeting!!

It looks like Canada geese are preparing to fly south for the winter at the St. Eugene Golf Course, now that the open water at the irrigation pond has frozen over since last weekend. They were also more easily spooked yesterday than a week ago. Perhaps they were more nervous following a cougar being sighted in the area two days before?

Today's sunset in and around Elizabeth Lake proved more spectacular with each passing minute.

Spotted during a walk up Joseph Creek from Baker Park to Kinsmen Park in Cranbrook on a mild December afternoon.

Skaters brave the soft ice in Baker Park on the site of what used to be the largest outdoor swimming pool in Western Canada before it was filled in back in 1968.

A playful pileated woodpecker plays hide and go seek.

Ice stalactites under the ice on Joseph Creek.
