Sad news from O.W.L. Their resident female golden eagle Goldie passed away today. She has been at O.W.L. for 20 years. Martina Versteeg has posted this message on O.W.L.'s Facebook page:

"Goldie our permanent education female Golden Eagle, who put fear into our volunteers and staff, has passed away after 20 years at our facility, She was lost under anaesthetic today will undergoing surgery for a ongoing foot problem. She has educated hundereds of people, on Golden Eagles, behaviour, taught young how to hunt, and even pushed some Bald Eagles around in her hay day. She will be greatly missed. Merrit her mate will still be around to continue educating. RIP Goldie"

Sorry Grizz. After reading that newspaper article I have no respect whatsoever for the subhuman who wrote those comments on Facebook about Hope and Lily. That is beyond despicable.

I assume the FB thing was about hunting for Hope? I don't know because I refuse to use FB. No apology needed though because there are a whole lot of jerks here and one of them may be Rogers, the one who set the cam up. I don't know him but he has a whole lot of negative baggage in this state. He pretty much tames the bears to the point where he can go out and live among them. It gets him a lot of press coverage but I'm not sure of the scientific value. But then I am no expert but just a know nothing grunt. very embarrassed

I too often cry like a widdle baby when I see some poor creature lose it's life. Yet we know full well that billions of wee innocent critters around the world suffer and die each day. It's the way of life, and it's one of the few things we can be certain will happen to us one day. Perhaps the best we can hope for is that there will be someone to cry for us when we fall out of our nest.

Hunting is a touchy topic indeed. It's no wonder so many hate it. I used to hunt but quit when I found myself hoping I wouldn't see any deer. I was well acquainted with the Department of Natural Resources, since I too worked for the state. I know of their efforts, and I know that hunters are among the few who are willing to pay for it. I've seen whole herds (yards if you will) of deer starve during the winter, leaving their carcasses littering the forest floor in the spring, because there were just a few too many deer for the available food. I've seen a couple Hollywood actors promoting the feeding of deer up here, which was a hot political topic at the time. They lost interest mid winter and the entire deer population along the north shore of Lake Superior just south of Canada was nearly wiped out. I'm talking about unbelievable devastation, because there happened to be a severe winter that year (and you folks in Canada, like us northern Minnesotans, know full well what a severe winter is. An un-knowledgeable person wouldn't last more than a few minutes in such an extreme.) The deer population didn't recover for years.

It's a yin yang sort of thing. * Compassionately, there are few more miserable ways to die than starvation. True, it's a natural way to go, but the deer population in this area was created by the affects of man on our ecosystem leaving the deer dependent upon us. * Sans compassion, entire yards of deer dieing to no avail in the middle of winter is a terrible waste. The meat of just a few of those deer could have fed many people, and the deer yard could have been spared for the wolves and other creatures.

You folks here know this well. We can cry for the fallen creature, hate the efforts of man to kill our animals, but at the same time know that it all must be for life to thrive where man populates the land. The best kind efforts of the un-knowledgeable can destroy life as we know it, and that's the ultimate threat. That's why our wildlife biologists are so important to us here, and it's why we work so hard to promote research and education.

What I truly detest are the hunters who seek trophies in Africa, animals that they cannot eat. Like the beautiful cats and the magnificent elephants. That is a true shame. Cry

Well said Elle. I care not for people like that! Let's face it, hunters don't need to and oughtn't EVER to kill, except to help an animal(s)!

Aw yes, Sassy. It is so sad for Lily and esp. Hope! Love the pic of the young elephant! And am even sadder for Goldie! Cry

Hi Kari, you are my hero for looking after and caring for the dogs in need! Thank You

Hi Bev! Yes, had a good day, thanks! NNST!

Debs, K18 knows a good thing when she sees it! She'll move on when the instinct kicks in!

Grizz, I think we all are stricken by senseless killing as well as death from difficult situations/weather, etc. and I have been known to tear up or even weep, for many!

Now, NNSTDLBBBYA!!! happy Cool hug Nodding Left thumb up Whistling sleepy Good night
