In 2008 Nova Scotia Power and the Nova Scotia Museum of Natural History launched the Osprey cam to track the family of Ethel and Oscar and their offspring.. after nesting on a utility pole, power line technicians moved the nest to a safe location where the Osprey have returned to each spring.. for the protection of the birds the actual location of the nest is not released.

2012 Season..

Cam on..
Thursday April 19, 2012.
Male Osprey was seen on April 14, 2012 by Kelly .. ground observer.. then Oscar was seen on the nest April 19, 2012..

Our Resident MOm Ethel didn't make it back to this nest... We assume she didn' have a successful migration... but we really don't know..:cry1:
There was lots of activity in the nest with Osprey going and coming.. it was even thought that there were two females at one point fighting for the territory...
May 5 -May13
Male and Female were on the nest, bonding and nestorating.. we thought at that time we had a nesting pair on the nest and we were looking forward to eggs then for some reason., the female stopped coming to the nest..there were some reports of a dead Osprey at the site.. The Power Company went to the nest area and investigated..there was no dead Osprey to be found...I called the DNR and they checked also..and found nothing...

The Male cont. to visit the nest mostly everyday and brought in a lot of sticks..THis went on all summer then on June 15.We saw Male and Female again on the nest... we don't know if was the same Female we saw earlier or another one... the birds are not banded...

June 15-June 30..It was just the Male that was seen on the nest...bringing in sticks and protecting his territory .. but we all felt the Female was out there with the Male and that she was just not visiting the nest... no need for her to do so now...it was too late in the season...

July 4.The Female and Male were on the nest... then it was just the Male visiting until July 26...The pair were on the nest together again.. so it confirmed our suspicions that the female was def. around.Male was coming to the nest almost everyday after that visit then we again saw the male and female together on the nest on Aug./9.

Female was last seen on the nest Aug.9, 2012..1:54pm-1:57pm.

SInce then the male does visit the nest..the last sighting to date was Aug. 16.
The cam was down Aug.18 , 19 and early morning of the 20...

Male was on the nest Aug. 22..from 2:54pm -3:11pm...

Juvie was seen on the nest Aug.22 at 10:45am.. a quick stop.. was in and out....i suspect he was passing through and stopped for a break..

Male was last seen on the nest Sat.Aug.25 at 6:06am - 6:11am

Recordings were done on the nest Aug.26, Aug.27 from 6:00am --9:30am...No Osprey seen..

Recordings Aug.28 6am----9:30am and 5pm --6:30pm... No Osprey seen...

Thank you Jazzel for the recordings...

We are monitoring this nest cam as much as we can.. we are not there all the time... so maybe we missed some visits..

Sept.11, 2012... To our knowledge we haven't seen an Osprey on the nest since Aug 25.... so we are assuming they have migrated... having had no fledglings to care for.....

2011 nesting season - cam turned on May 9 -

Time Line for 2011
Three eggs were already in the nest when the cam came on line May 9, 2011
First egg hatched June 10, 2011.. later named Hunter
Second egg hatched June 12, 2011..later named Fisher
Third egg hatched June 14, 2011... This Chick died on June 17, 2011.

Hunter had successful first fledge on August 5, 2011, but sadly died around August 9; her body was found near the nest August 11 and it was reported that she might have fallen from the nest; there were bad storms in the area at the time she likely disappeared.

PhoneReport from Terry White DNR on Hunter .. Sept 20, 2011.
Cause of death was electrocution from flying into a power line

Fisher had successful first fledge on August 7, 2011.
Fisher migrated Sept.17, 2011.

Mom was last seen on the nest Aug.24, 2011..we assume she started her migration.

Dad was last seen on the nest Sept. 16, 2011.

Fisher was last seen on the nest Sep.17, 2011
