I just learned that last week, one eaglet hit a power line and was burned on her breast. However, she is still alive and was picked up and is under the care of a raptor center. If she recovers, she will find her new home with the biologist who so diligently photographed the eaglets all summer.

I'm so sorry to hear about the fledgling, Sue. I'm glad she was found and is still alive, but sad that her injuries are apparently too severe for them to consider release a possibility. Still, it is good that there is a wildlife center where she can go if all goes well - and where they already know what a special young eagle she is, and I know she'll be a good ambassador for her species.

I'll keep my fingers crossed that all goes well.

Update on the injured eaglet. The caretakers have determined that she was hit by a car rather than electrocuted. I just got an update that she had a 3-hour surgery on Wednesday to repair a broken femur. She is now in a rehab center in Helena, Montana, in very good hands.

Meanwhile, one eaglet remains near the nest. He often sits in the nest by himself, looking a bit lonely. Hunting is very good evidently. I see him perched on various trees and swooping down on things. Everyone else has wandered off for the late summer. I did briefly see one of the adults at the nest a few days ago.

Good and bad news. Our injured eaglet, even with the best of care in a Helena refuge, didn't make it. She was unable to recover from her injuries and died.

But today the eagle parents were back at one of their favorite dead trees. One of the eaglets, I think it's Joker, is not leaving the area. He has picked a tree that's closer to my window and uses it as his special perch. He sits at the very top limb of the tree and goes after mice in the ditch along the railroad tracks. I'll be trying to get a photo now that he frequents it more often. It's a bit unusual because the eaglets usually move on by this time of year.

I'm sure we're in for more adventures with this nest in the years to come.

Oh Sue, I'm so sorry to hear about the loss of the injured eaglet. At least we know she had the best of care, and was safe and cared for when she passed over.

And interesting that Joker(?) is still hanging around the nest. One of the eaglets on the Channel Islands is also visiting the nest - and sometimes being fed - much later than normal. Perhaps we need to expand our definition of normal a bit!

It will be interesting to see what happens next year - and thanks so much for sharing all this with us.
