Just a short summary of our sometimes good AND VERY sad year for the Norfolk eagles of the Norfolk Botanical Gardens. The season started out normally with the wonderful parents rebuilding their nest in tandem and Mom laying another THREE eggs. The incubating went normally with Mom doing her usual good job through all sorts of weather with Dad taking his turn and sometimes spoiling Mom...he is a most excellent Dad!!! Eventually the eggs hatched one by one and we had the typical large bully, the middle child and the much smaller little brother. Dad brought in a wealth of food for his growing chicks and many times you would see Dad and Mom passing food back and forth as they fed the eaglets together...not something that is seen in many nests! Dad would also actually feed Mom some of the more juicy morsels...they really did seem to be a very loving pair of eagles. Near the end of April, on the 26th, we were all saddened :cry1: to hear the unthinkable!!!!! Our beautiful, smart, loving Mom had been hit and killed by an airplane landing at the nearby airport. It's still hard to even think about her loss. Dad came back to the nest and tried to do his best but it was decided to remove all three chicks from the nest and take them to a most excellent facility, The Wildlife Center of Virginia. These wonderful folks raised all three eaglest in a nest that they built especially for them until they were ready for a flight cage where they stayed until it was time to release them. They worked hard and even placed a live cam in their "rooms" so that the faithful could watch them grow. Eventually it was time to bid farewell to Mom's last babies. The largest bird, NX, was fittled with a transmitter to make it possible to follow her travels for a while. Release day, July 27th, at a large historic plantation on the James River across from a wildlife refuge.......The other two eaglets took off and soared into the sky doing Mom Norfolk proud. The third eaglet, NX, with the transmitter flew for a while very close to the ground and eventually landed on the ground in a grove of trees. She was re-captured and returned to the WCV where they decided to give her some extra time to mature. The second release went well and she soared into the skies to join her siblings....Mom's last eaglet.


Dad Norfolk weathered hurricane Irene and has been seen sitting on his favorite perches and flying through the "Gardens". He is a handsome eagle, a good father , and in good health. It is hoped that he will find a new mate and that they will make their home in the Norfolk Botanical Gardens so that we may continue this family's saga on the eagle cam.

Our beautiful Mom will never be forgotten. With funds raised by her many fans and viewers of the cam the Norfolk Botanical Garden will be dedicating a beautiful memorial garden and eagle statue to her in a wonderful public ceremony on October 15, 2011.

Eggs hatched - March 13th (38 days) - March 15th (37 days) - March 17th (36 days)

Banded April 21, youngest to oldest:
Eaglet banded "NV" is male, at 5.75 lbs. (35 days)
Eaglet banded "NX" is female, at 6.78 lbs. (37 days)
Eaglet banded "NZ" is female, at 7.5 lbs. (39 days)

Fledged - June 14th in flight cage - (93 days- time due to a leg injury) - June 8th in flight cage - (84 days) - June 7th in flight cage - (82 days)
