Thanks, junie! I noticed another feeding but wasn't sure if it was leftovers or a new fish.

Mom is doing a good job!

cherry peeping mum lands in defensive mode...both squawking loud now. I don't know but I think it could be at intruder or cherry peeping for more fish

I wonder how many other nests go through a season of the male abandoning his family like this ? Has anyone else watched a nest with one parent doing all the work ?
It definitely has to create a problem for the development of the chick when Mom has to be gone so often to do the work of both adults.
Sad

I rarely post, but I do watch this nest. Mom is often in the warning alarm mode. It seems to me to be more often than in other nests and has made me wonder if perhaps the male has met a bitter end. It was mentioned earlier that there is an eagle family in the area. I would think the Osprey would be on the losing end of a fight with an eagle.

Cherry has learned the "defensive warning" vocals - This image from 9:45 this morning

I hope it isn't the case that the male met an unfortunate end.

Did anyone notice that the chick's wings have "blue" tips?

7/14/11 (1014amPST) mom just left the nest. The chick is at the 11 o clock edge in a very funny (but dangerous) position. It is precariously leaning forward, showing its butt to the cam...Faint

I hope it moves closer to the center of the nest!

Thanks Bet...Having an eagle in the vicinity would most certainly make life for this osprey family harder on them...osprey sometimes do lose or drop their catch if persued by an eagle...safer to drop the fish, than tangle with an eagle.

I seen that incident, but trying to post picture wasn't easy for me.

Thanks, BET. I've read what seemed a reliable report of an osprey pair that killed a juvenile eagle that was threatening their young - but agree that's probably unusual. I have seen our local osprey chase eagles out of their airspace - and have the impression that adults of both species don't generally mess with each other, self-preservation being important to both.

I think it may have been the Puleston nest on Long Island a few years ago where observers thought the male had disappeared. A ground observer went out to the cam, and discovered that there was either another osprey or pair of osprey trying to take over the nest, and the male was spending all his time chasing them out of his territory. They gave up and moved on after a few days, and the male returned to providing for the nest. I don't think any chicks were lost, but we were worried until fish deliveries returned to normal. They had a very dedicated core group, so I'm sure that the adult that returned was the original male.
