Okay a few questions because I am new (to the blackeagle cam). Did both eggs hatch? And, what is in front of the nest where mom lays. It is furry and whitish gray...please don't say baby two!?

Hi muirhead77!Hello
In response to your question:
Beans posted that "2 eggs were laid 4/17 and ?
Hatch 6/4 or 6/5"

Then nightowl posted this from Facebook:
"This was posted Saturday morning, June 4, on Facebook...

Black Eagle Project Roodekrans

The second egg hatched today, thank goodness one egg hatched otherwise we would have had egg on our faces. Excuse the pun! Yip you can break open that bottle of wine! Prey was bought to the nest around 11 and the young chick has had its first feed. Well done eMoyeni you have done it again.

Now I'm really confused. Beans video showed one chicklet, so are they saying that is the only chicklet in the nest so far, or did the other suddenly hatch and there are 2? Sounds like there is still only one in the nest, but how in the world do they know it came from the second egg? Are they numbered? "

Hope this helps!?
I saw the white in front of the nest today too and was wondering what that was. The practice with the black eagles is that only one chick survives. The oldest and strongest will kill the weaker one. We never saw another chick in the nest, but it's possible!?? Maybe JudyB, nightowl, or Beans have an answer!???Don't KnowPuzzled

Hi and welcome muirhead77! Hello

Good to see you here and if you have any questions, we'll do our best to answer them. We're still learning about the Black Eagle also, so we can all learn together.

From the information we have (and I can find), only one egg hatched, and Black Eagle Project Roodekrans believes it's the second egg. It's too late for the first one to hatch now, so only one chick again this year. As Jean stated, the black eagle chicks instinctively practice Cainism...the oldest kills the youngest usually within the first few days after the youngest hatches. It's rare to find a nest with 2 chicks.

As far as the white object in the nest, I'm not sure what that is. It's possible it could be egg shell from either of the eggs or something Emoyeni or Thulani brought in with nesting materials. Or it could be part of a meal. Sorry I can't be of more help there.

12:03PM CAT The cam is down again. A deep sigh
