I have a vague recollection that you can use corn stalks as a natural dye - I know occasionally eggs do pick up some color from the material in the nest - perhaps that's happening here. It is a more distinctive color difference than I'm used to seeing in eagle nests - will be interesting to see if the other one also becomes darker in a couple of days, or if the dark one becomes lighter.

I was wondering about the egg coloration. I have seen dirtier or darker areas but this egg looks different. It will be interesting to watch and see what happens with it.

Just read your post Judy....so I guess we will wait and see.

Nice pictures and reports everybody!! Wonderful scaps of the snow on Saturday!!!!! Smile I'm afraid I've been a bit AWOL with good reason lately and I really appreciate all the news! I didn't even know there was a second egg. I'm a little concerned about that first egg that y'all think is a funny color. I'd like to re-post Mayline's pic of the egg from 2/24...the day it was laid and then today's shot where it looks pretty strange!!

Here is Mayline's great close-up of the newly laid egg on Feb 24th. It is sort of speckled looking , with some gray, but mostly white-ish and looks fairly smooth.

Now today, Feb 27th, at about 5:45 PM. It is really dark and almost textured or withered looking (click to see it). I've never seen an egg like this one. Maybe this egg is't good..time will tell!! (bev posted a pic similar to this one)

I do have some other pics from Feb 27th that I'd like to post...I never seem to have time to do it earlier. It's sort of a quick summary of the day.

Click on image to download This pic and the next are good looks at the eggs. Egg #1 still looks fairly light and smoothish in the morning.
