Hi Soph

We have our talons crossed for this beautiful couple. If
the eggs do not make it they have plenty of time to lay some
more; sunhine is on the way....

Mother nature sure knew how to create the perfect storm at least
the metrologists were happy. It was difficult to hear Ma cheeping
earlier this evening! Ma and Pa did a great job !

Thanks for the video Soph I watched the nest all day and it was heartbreaking.

I admit odds are not good for the first two eggs at Shepherdstown - but eggs are more resistant to cold than folks thought just a few years ago. I know the eggs on the the Maine Coast nest were left uncovered in sub-freezing temperatures for quite a while in 2007, and at least one hatched (though it was sadly lost in a huge storm shortly after it hatched).

I'm hoping that the sun will clear the nest in the next day or so, and that Belle has at least one more egg that she can lay once the nest is bare. If that happens, that egg will have a fairly good chance of hatching, while the chances for the first egg are pretty slim, and the chances for the second egg (most likely laid this afternoon) are not really promising.

Unfortunately, whether or not they are viable, the first two eggs will likely be in the nest when the snow disappears - and it's my guess Liberty and Belle won't try for a second clutch if they think they have eggs. So in my admittedly amateur judgment, our best chance for a chick is if they lay a third egg after the snow melts.

I think it's great that she did get food today - it takes nutrients to create a third egg. And I know that this pair can do miracles - so I'm not writing off any of the eggs just yet.

Thank you all for the reports today. I'm hoping to be online more tomorrow, so with a bit of luck will also be able to report on occasion.

They both soon left the nest. Very sad. I had written a paragraph but got disconnected. Have decided not to repeat what I said since it was too sad anyway.

Maybe the eagles have been through this before but I have not. If they are not going to give-up then neither am I - not 'til they do.
