We would like to welcome everyone to year four of our coverage of the R F Bald Eagle Cam here on the HWF forum.

This season all new equipment has been installed at the nest. The cams are ultra high definition.

The R F bald eagle nest is located North of Leesburg, on the Potomac River, a few miles north of George Washington's Mount Vernon home in Northern Virginia near a large horse breeding and training farm. We will not be divulging the exact location of the nest at the wish of the property and cam owner. This map shows the general location of the nest.

A little history of the nest --

Eagle Cam informed us that the original RF nest collapsed during the "Snowmageddon" in Feb 2010. This nest was built in the current tree near the old one and first used in 2011, thus this is 6th year for current nest.

This is their eleventh of watching this pair and this is the fifth year with a camera on the nest. Typically, they have had two eaglets survive each year. One year, only one survived. We have no idea how many eggs were laid in prior years. In 2011 three eaglets survived, and after leaving the nest, spent a few weeks together before moving on! In 2013 there were two eggs and both eaglets successfully left the nest

In 2014 there was one surviving eaglet, Justice, who fledged successfully. The other two eggs that were laid each had their own tragedy. Egg #1 was lost very close to the hatch day when a frozen rabbit was accidently dropped on it. Egg #2 successfully hatched but tiny Liberty9 was lost at the age of 6 days to unknown causes.

In 2015 we had only one egg hatch on March 24th. That chick--Glory -- was lost on March 25, 2015 at only one day old. We don't know why. The chick in the second egg ceased all movement on the third day of trying to hatch.

In 2016 we had 3 eggs but just 2 eaglets. Due to a malfunctioning cam we could not see too much of them. Here are the three eggs and the two tiny chicks before we lost the cam.

How to tell George and Martha apart? George's tail is heart shaped, Martha's goes straight across.
