WELCOME TO THE 2017 SEASON OF THE HALIFAX OSPREY NEST

Thank you N.S. Power and the Halifax Museum of Natural History
for this cam and thank you HWF for featuring it on your website along with a nest thread where we can post our observations, scaps and videos......giving us the opportunity to learn about these beautiful birds....

WEATHER

In 2008 Nova Scotia Power and the Nova Scotia Museum of Natural History launched the Osprey cam to track the family of Ethel and Oscar and their offspring.. after nesting on a utility pole, power line technicians moved the nest to a safe location where the Osprey have returned to each spring.. for the protection of the birds the actual location
of the nest is not released.

Last season at the nest was great .... Ethel laid three eggs and even though only one hatched ... we watched Ethel and Oscar raise a beautiful healthy chick who was named Posi by Judy B ..
Meet Posi - pronounced posy, like the beautiful flowers (because he or she is beautiful) - but also a reference to Poseidon, ruler of the seas (because he or she is becoming a powerful young osprey who soon will be soaring over the bays and sounds).

Thanks Judy !

Posi fledged successfully.. you can read all about .. 2016 Halifax Osprey Nest Thread

As a courtesy to viewers with slower internet connections, please limit the pictures in each post to no more than a total of 150,000 bytes (150KB), and please do not post animations (though it's fine to post a link to them). To avoid horizontal scrolling, please do not post pictures that are more than 500 pixels wide - though it's fine to post a 500-pixel-wide thumbnail that clicks to a much larger picture. The forum attachment software conveniently handles that task - so you can attach larger pictures, and a properly-sized clickable image will appear in your post. The preferred format for pictures is JPEG (.jpg), and three 500-pixel-wide JPEGs should be under the 150KB limit...

Egg Incubation Period... 35-42 days.. and we have seen the eggs hatch later in some cases.

Chicks Fledge Period.. 53 - 60 days old.....
Time Line

Cam on Line ..Wednesday ..April 26...2017

Adults Returned.. Ethel and Oscar on the nest Wednesday ..April 26 ...2017

Eggs laid ~~ Egg # 1 ..May 3 ..seen at 10:20am

Egg # 2 seen May 7 at 1:10pm. .. Probably laid May 6

Egg # 3 seen May 11 at 10am

Egg # 4 seen May 15 at 6:01am .. probably laid May 14

Egg # 5 seen June 2 at 7:25am

For the record ... Egg #1 was only incubated part of the time ..Egg #2 wasn't incubated at all .. All eggs where incubated on a regular basis after Egg # 3 was laid .. and three days later Egg # 4 was laid ..

Note ..On May 5 there was something going on off nest .. ? Territorial Dispute and we thought we were seeing a different male on the nest at times... this was all resolved when Egg # 3 was laid and the first Male was on the nest !

Re Osprey Nest
Egg Incubation Period... 35-42 days.. and we have seen the eggs hatch later in some cases.

So we can look for a hatch any day after June 7 that is day 35 for egg # 1 ... but since egg #1 was only incubated part of the time and egg # 2 wasn't incubated until get Egg# 3 was laid on May 11 .. that will bring us up to June 15 I think .. But anything is possible .
ADDED Egg # 5 was seen June 2 .so now I am totally confused ... LOL will have to wait and see how many hatches !

Eggs Hatched Chick # 1 hatched June 22 at 11:55am

Chick #2 hatched June 24 at 11:6am

The chicks are named Maud and Lewis

Fledged .. Maud Fledged at 7:05am Aug.18 .. 8 weeks + i1day old or 57days

Lewis Fledged at 2:55pm Aug.22..8 weeks+i day old or 59 days old

Last seen Oscar last seen on the nest with a fish Aug .8 at 12:28pm

Start here. Maud was last seen Sept.9 .. 79 days old. in addition..Maud tried to enter the nest many times and Lewis chased her off... and Judy thought it was Maud on tne nest Sept.13 when Lewis was eating and she left right away .Maud was 83 days old !

Mom last seen Sept.11

We think Mom and Maud were in the area for a while after that and that Mom was making sure that the Male would look after Lewis once she left

Lewis ..89 days old and the Male Sept.21

Male..Sept.21 making sure Lewis was gone.

Poem by Carolyn aka Woodlands Bleu

Softly the season is slipping south, soon, very soon to go to see,
the secrets that are known to Dad, while Posi's story is yet to be.

Unfolding day by day, maybe there, maybe not, maybe gone on that brisk South wind,
to traverse the skies with fish in their eyes, knowing something leads them instinctively.

Following what others travel, to see their route, makes it clear that without a doubt,
the plan is there, we are only beginning to know, nothing random just a surety of nature.

So......Godspeed Posi, Oscar too, we wish you fish in abundance with life so full,
visions to see, knowing you shared your life with us, in itself is enough.

Fly, the wind on your wings.

The annual migration by Ospreys from northern breeding grounds to southern wintering spots and back again never ceases to amaze or raise questions. Here, Dr. Bob Kennedy answers a few

Osprey with fishDescription: Also known as the “fish hawk,” ospreys are raptors that are well adapted for fishing. They have long legs and large feet with specialized barbs on the pads, hooked talons, and a reversible outer toe that allows them to easily grasp fish with two toes pointing front and two pointing rear. They have an oily waterproof coating on their wings, and they can close their nostrils when they plunge into the water. They have slender bodies and long wings that are bent at the ‘wrist’. Their strong wings give them extra lift to fly up and out of the water with a heavy fish. They have a black bill with a sharp hook for eating fish.

Beautiful Ethel is on the nest standing on leg

This posture helps birds conserve both heat and energy. ... The arteries that transport warm blood into the legs lie in contact with the veins that return colder blood to the bird's heart. The arteries warm the veins. By standing on one leg, a bird reduces by half the amount of heat lost through unfeathered limbs
