Welcome to the 2016/2017 Season!

Stalashen Nest

Welcome to this thread. If you visit the Stalashen nest in Sechelt you are welcome to post comments and pictures here.

Earl & I have been watching this nest in Sechelt from our living room, through a telescope and binoculars. My husband saw that the nest was being used several years ago but we didn't see the eagles there again until 2008. We have been following it ever since. We have talked to a few of the people living close to the nest and they said that it has been there over 20 years. Unfortunately, it did blow down in July 2009 after a windstorm but we are happy to tell you that the eagles have built a new nest. When the nest blew down one of the eaglets had branched and the 2nd one was fine also, the eagles fed them on a branch before they fledged. We look through our telescope at this nest which is about a mile and a half away. We can only see them clearly in the morning or evening due to the glare from the water and thermal interference.

I am happy to say that in February 2010 I met Sandra, (stim) and she started to post on the threads, Karen H, Aspen and Heatherj have joined our team also to report on this nest and the other nests on the Sunshine Coast. Also, several HWF members posted their pictures and observations when they were in the area visiting or attending a Lunch Bunch meet! Thank You

2009 - 2 eaglets not named. Fledged.
2010 - 1 eaglet Sunny. Fledged.
2011 - 1 eaglet Bluster June 21 Bluster branched. Fledged.
2012 - 1 eaglet Pacer June 27 Pacer branched. Fledged.
2013 - 1 eaglet Hydan June branched. Fledged.
2014 - 2 eaglets branched ..... Fledged July 16.
2014 - Sep 28, 5:50pm Ma/Pa Stalashen back!
2015 - 2 eaglets branched.......Fledged
2015 - Sep 30 Ma/Pa returned.
2016 - 1 eaglet, Orel fledged June 28. At the beginning of this season we thought that there were 2 eaglets in this nest but on May 19 we could only see one eaglet through the telescope. We don't know what happened but what was believed to be an eagle wing was found on the ground by two of our members Karen H and Aspen. Karen H stated "At the time we didn't know if it was from the missing eaglet or another bird". As stated on the thread I contacted Gibsons Wildlife but they had not had any report of an eaglet found on the ground.

Looking through the telescope today I could see perhaps a juvie Dunno perched on the branch of the nest tree. Not a good day for pictures but here it is.

How wonderful to be able to post a sighting of some sort in this thread already! I agree that juvie is the best guess from your viewpoint.

Oh how wonderful, Marg. That is a excellent news. Now we wait for the mate.
I have not seen any eagles in our area yet. I keep looking ..... Yesterday I said to Ian, " I am desperate to see an eagle" Smile

Wow. Thanks for the report, Marg. I believe that one of your nests up there in Porpoise Bay was very late leaving this year. David saw an eagle out in the Delta/Tsawwassen area yesterday. They are on their way back and we still have nest work to do!!

Hi Lynda and Karen nice to see you here. Yes, I was excited to see the eagle this morning. I did see a juvie in that tree recently also. We saw an eagle fly over our house several days ago which is from the Chapman nest.
They are slowly returning.
