Wow Elle, this just floored me when I first read about it. I think it's taken a lot of us eagle watchers by surprise. You are now making the rounds on facebook. I'm just amazed. Also, thank you for keeping an eye on our Ma and Pa Sidney.

Thanks Elaine. Yes FB and my Youtube has gone wild, too. It is marvelous to see natural adversaries behaving this way . You can imagine my surprise when we saw it. It still remains to be seen what will happen over the next month or so. Many people have asked to have a cam or to rescue the hawk. We cannot and will not do either of these things. Installing a cam at this point would be disturbing an active nest and so would having someone go up to take the hawk out of the nest. There is no man made reason to intervene and we will not intervene. Upsetting the nest right now risks the eagles not coming back to that nest next year.
David Hancock and I are communicating regularly and he is up to date with Ian's and my observations, videos and photos.

Just spoke with David. He thinks the eeyas , official name for a hawk chick but I prefer hawklet, will fledge successfully . The problem , if there is one, will be if the hawk identifies with eagles as allies in the future.

I finally got through the photos I took during my first visit to the nest yesterday. The neighbour in the corner house was out gardening and invited me in to get closer to the nest; I thanked her but said I could see more from a distance. When the hawklet gets bigger it will be easier to see. I caught a few glimpses of the top of it's head while it was moving around in the nest but that was all.

2 eaglets visible.

During my later afternoon visit to the nest site, I decided to use a different camera and lens, and stand in a different spot to stay out of the sun. Unfortunately, the sun was glaring on the nest and where I was standing was farther away from the nest Roll eyes The photos aren't the greatest quality but at least the hawklet came out for a photo op Wub I have lots more photos to go through but here are the first few. They have all been cropped considerably.

A few more photos from my late afternoon visit yesterday. Mom had flown in with some prey and was feeding the hawklet. The eaglets didn't seem to mind that they didn't get any.

cont'd. I apoligize for the poor quality of the photos. The sun was glaring on the front of the nest while the back was in the shadow.
