The Slocan Valley Rail Trail is worth exploring. It runs from Slocan at the southern end of Slocan Lake to South Slocan a distance of just over 45 km. Winlaw is almost the mid-point and makes a good centre. The ride S from Winlaw to Crescent Valley follows the old railroad trail and runs beside the Slocan River for most of the way.

The trail varies between fine and hard gravel and makes for pleasant riding through rural countryside.

The views are spectacular in either direction.

There are several places where the trail can be accessed. Crescent Valley is a good spot to stop for refreshment on a round trip.

The Slocan Valley Rail Trail is worth exploring. Surprisingly we saw few people during our two days riding the length of the trail.

On our second day we biked N from Winlaw to Slocan.

The Slocan River begins its journey from Slocan Lake as it travels S to meet the Kootenay River between Nelson and Castlegar.

For the past few years a heron colony by the St. Mary River at the St. Eugene Mission has been a favourite place to visit.

Sadly all the nests were destroyed in a windstorm in July. There has been no sign of the herons since.
