Welcome to the Porpoise Bay thread for the 2016 nesting season. Please feel free to post any photos, observations or discussions you may have about this nest or area.

This is a new nest by an established couple at the top of Porpoise Bay out of Sechelt Inlet. They had a previous nest I discovered in 2009 in the same stand of trees. That nest blew down in April 2010. From there they built a nest deeper into the stand of trees but now have returned within our viewing range.
Marg/sunshinecoast and I were informed about it on our local Wildlife Spotting group this month. It can be viewed off the public pier at the top of Porpoise Bay or while seated in The Lighthouse Pub nearby.
The territory is adjacent to what has been our Sechelt Marsh nest territory but that nest blew down last July. The parents have not rebuilt in that nest tree and we have yet to discover their new nest. The new Porpoise Bay nest could be of our Marsh parents if a territorial dispute took place or could be of the Porpoise Bay couple.

I know that in 2009 two eaglets fledged. I have often seen this couple perched within the stand of trees and now they feel ready to allow us to view their nest again.

Marg/sunshinecoast took this picture which shows the shoreline in relation to the nest tree position. It is a tree that has been topped which the eagles used to use as a perch tree. The nest sits on the top of what's left of the tree.

I visited Feb 21 to find Pa perched in a tree above the nest tree. No sign of Ma while I was there. A friend visited since then and found both adults adding to the nest. Clapping

I found these bufflehead quite humorous looking with their markings. Kind of sad looking.
