We would like to thank Alcoa for providing us with these cams. They allow us to have a unique view, complete with it's own perch, so that we might peek into the lives of this beautiful pair of Bald Eagles.

About Alcoa Davenport Works, Iowa, USA---

Alcoa Davenport Works has a longstanding commitment to the environment
The plant has conducted annual briefings for local environmental groups for the past 20 years
The plant has reduced air emissions by over 97% since 1988
The eagles nesting at Davenport Works hatched and fledged a pair of eaglets in 2010 and a single eaglet in 2011 and triplets in 2012. In 2013, two eaglets fledged-- and last season in the spring of 2014 one eaglet named Rudy was fledged.

The plant installed the original camera in November 2010 and installed a new camera in October 2011. Another new camera was installed at the end of 2012. We lost this cam due to a lightning strike and a temporary one was installed on a rented lift which was taken off line in mid July of 2013.

Since then-in September of 2013- the original cam has been replaced and a second cam with a long distance look at the nest was installed. Together these two cams offer us a very different look into the lives of this eagle family.

This year, for 2015/16, the cams have been upgraded again and the views slightly changed. They were able to back it up and raise the angle a bit to get a little wider shot of the nest. Hopefully this will be helpful to see parents and eaglets this next season

-----------------------

We had an unfortunate season last year. Juvenile eagles constantly invaded the nest and caused the eggs from two clutches to have long stretches of non-incubation and we had no eaglets.

A little information about the nest---

The pair of eagles who "reside" in this nest are beautiful Liberty, the female and handsome Justice, the male

Liberty seems to have a lot of gray in the feathers sweeping back from her eyes and a larger brow bone. Justice has larger neres and some dark around his golden eyes. Liberty's tail feathers are more straight across than Justice's and of course Liberty is quite a bit larger than Justice.

----------

The nest is built in an oak tree near the Mississippi River near the Alcoa Davenport Works plant and is about 80 to 85 feet above the ground.

This nest was originally built in 2009 so it is still a relatively new nest
.
This pair does not migrate--they remain in the area of the nest all year.

Employees and the community helped name the eagle pair Liberty and Justice.

This pair of bald eagles joined the Alcoa Davenport community in Iowa in 2009. They built their 7-foot nest on Alcoa's 400-acre facility in a tree near the Mississippi River. In the spring of 2010 they fledged a pair of eaglets and later that year we installed our first Eaglecam. In 2011 one eaglet named Freedom was fledged from the nest. Alcoa launched a new camera with improved video streaming for the 2012 season and more recently they replaced that cam with another brand new one for the 2013 season. This cam has been replaced as it was damaged and a second cam for long distance viewing was added for the 2013-2014 season.

In the fall and winter Liberty and Justice use the nest to eat and to prepare the nest for the next season. Eagles nesting in Iowa typically lay eggs in late February or early March and the eggs hatch in late March or early April. The eaglets grow quickly and are ready to fly “fledge” in late May or early June. Alcoa is proud that their unwavering commitment to environmental sustainability is helping conserve precious natural resources.

Posting a few of the more recent updates from Alcoa --

Thursday, October 1, 2015

Cooler weather & more activity ahead
The brisk breeze this morning reminds all of us in the Quad Cities that the start of winter is just a couple of months away. We are seeing Liberty & Justice stop by the nest a little more regularly. Below is a picture from about 6:45 this morning. Late December and early January are really the time when they will be around almost all of the time. We are looking forward to a great nesting season in 2016!

Working on the Cams
We swapped out cameras in the Nest View spot earlier this week. Unfortunately we are having some technical issues with the new cam getting it to connect online. We hope to resolve the issue yet this week or early next week. Until we are finished you will likely see a few times where both cameras go offline for from time to time.

Camera Installed
We did get the new camera connected yesterday afternoon. We were able to back it up and raise the angle a bit to get a little wider shot of the nest. Hopefully this will be helpful to see parents and eaglets this next season. We are having some problems with some with colors in the picture part of the time. It appears this is a problem with a processing board in the computer that streams this camera. We will have to order a couple of parts and install them as soon as they come in.

A couple of you have asked about night vision. We do have better sensitivity with these new cameras but not true night vision. The best nighttime views are when we have a full moon or when we have low cloud cover that reflects the lights of the metro.

Getting Busy Soon
It has been an interesting week with juvie eagles showing up in the nest multiple times. We hope to resolve both the audio problem and the intermittent video issue with the Nest View camera during the first half of next week. You will likely see the cameras go offline for a few hours while we do the work to make the fixes. Keep your fingers crossed and we should be good to go for the new season.

Continuing to Work on Camera
We are continuing to work on the camera and the various connection points to come up with a permanent fix to the pixelation we get on the Nest View camera. We know a lot of things that are not causing the issue, but we are still working to find the cause and fix it. Hopefully we will get the job done in the next few days. And for those of you asking if I have been up in the basket of the lift by the nest...the answer is no. We have very good and very talented Alcoans who do that and do it well.
