We had our first walk to Elizabeth Lake.
We had fun taking part in different activities
To make us more aware of our senses
And how to use them effectively
When we go on field trips.

Another walk to Elizabeth Lake,
But using a different route this time.
First there was a ditch with water to negotiate
In the middle of a patch of cattails.

Then we looked for a mullein stalk
The same height as ourselves.
That proved tricky for some of the adults,
But not for the kids!

Afterwards we worked in pairs or small groups
Picking rosehips off the wild rose plants.
Next week we plan to make rosehip jelly.

A walk to Elizabeth Lake
On a warm, sunny fall afternoon
To see changes since our last trip,
And a chance to apply
Nature's Sunscreen
From the bark
Of the trembling aspen.

Checking out the lake
And the algae bloom
On the surface

Check out this cool cricket!

I wonder what this pair saw
At Elizabeth Lake?

As it got warmer,
Several common spreadwing damselflies appeared
Almost as if by magic!

This afternoon while checking out the water level at Idlewild, I met a biologist who was examining a 3 year old western painted turtle
to make sure that it was healthy, and hadn't been affected by the changing conditions in the lake since early spring.

It was a rare treat to be able to study the underside of the shell.

Western painted turtles are such interesting creatures.

A walk to Kinsmen Park
To work with Grade 12s
While learning about Joseph Creek
Through activities like
Water Magic.

Then investigating Macro-invertebrates,
The critters that live in the creek,
Which are clues to the health of the creek.

Living the life of a water molecule
In The Water Cycle game.
Then carrying some water in a bucket
In Water In Africa,
And imagining what it would be like
To have to walk a distance
To get water,
Then carry it all the way back,
Remembering that every drop
Is precious
Because you can only use
What you bring back!
Aren't we lucky
To get our water from a tap?
