how to tell the adults apart

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
2015 Nesting Season
  • Eggs Laid: June 26, 11:38 pm; June 30, 5:43 am
  • Eggs Hatch: August 7, 1:30 am (42 days); August 7, 4:10 pm (38 days)
  • Interesting Note: by the time they were a couple of days old, second-hatched SE16 was bigger than SE15, and seemed more dominant
  • Branching: SE16 - October 17 (71 days); SE15 - October 26 (80 days)
  • Fledge: SE16 - October 21, 5:38 pm (75 days)
  • SE15 to Rehab: November 1 (86 days) SE15 attempted to fly from a branch to the nest and missed his landing, and his efforts to fly back up were unsuccessful, and he ended up on the ground; he seemed OK and was walking around - but couldn't get off the ground to avoid predators, so was rescued and taken for an exam, which showed that his primary feathers and some of his secondary feathers did not develop properly. The damaged feathers were removed, in the hopes that the new feathers that would grow in to replace them would be normal, and SE15 did well in rehab through November and December, recovering from a respiratory infection, eating well, and gaining weight; it seemed likely if he could not be returned to the wild, he might become an animal ambassador, helping others learn about sea eagles.
  • Last Seen: SE16 was last seen in the area in early December, so he or she was about 17 weeks old when s/he left the nest area, and had been flying for about 6 weeks.
  • Sad News: The blood test results for SE15 arrived January 12, and we learned that he had beak and feather disease, which is common in parrots but rare in raptors, and we learned that the new feathers coming in were showing more malformation than had been previously noted, and his beak was beginning to show some deformity (and we learned he was male). Sadly SE15's condition continued to deteriorate, and he was euthanized January 18 (23-1/2 weeks old)
2016 Nesting Season
  • Sad News: We start the 2016 nesting season on a sad note - Mom sea eagle appeared to by having respiratory issues in the early spring, and disappeared (and likely died) in February
  • Happier News: Eagles do move on faster than people, and a new female was seen with Dad by early April - and they became a pair; observers think she's 5 or 6 years old, and she's being called Lady
  • Eggs Laid: June 19, 9:00 pm (SE17); June 23, 1:15 am (SE18)
  • Eggs Hatch: July 29, about 8:30 pm; July 31, about 7 am
  • More Sad News: younger eaglet SE18 died August 9
Smile Thank You Judy B for the new thread
They are so beautiful and I'm sure the new nest will bring them more success this year.
It's also nice to have a nest to watch during the BE "off season"
