The fledgling takes off again while the others look on. Just what is Osprey etiquette in terms of landing on your sibling?

Hello Everyone,
I'm new to this post. I usually report on Port Moody's post, however, I had the opportunity to visit this Osprey nest. It is well hidden along the banks of the Fraser River. The terrain to get to this nest is quite challenging, but well worth the view of a mother and her 3 chicks!

Two people that were visiting this nest had said that I had just missed one of the chicks doing a small flight in a short U-turn over the nest!
Darn!
I hope to visit this nest again, in the near future.

Hey Hey Confusion Circle!
Thank you for telling us about this nest. It's really nice and close to shore. Perfect for pictures. Maybe we'll see you sometime over the weekend, now that the PM Osprey has fledged!

What great pictures - thank you all so much! Grin

This is a bit of a change of pace - but I think it falls under the category of osprey news. Trudikk brought my attention to a series of videos posted by the Dyfi Osprey Project, that were originally broadcast on the BBC Autumnwatch program. They talk about the three chicks hatched at the Dyfi nest in 2011 - the first osprey chicks in that part of Wales for perhaps 400 years. But what I found most interesting is that Roy Dennis, who banded the chicks and put transmitters on them, also traveled along the route where they migrate - and actually spotted the oldest chick Einion in Senegal, West Africa! I haven't watched them all yet - but the ones I have watched are very interesting, and I've learned a few new things. Osprey from the northern part of North America generally migrate to South America - but I'm guessing some of the places they choose to spend their winters are similar. love

The link is here - http://www.dyfiospreyproject.com/autumnwatch

And I will mention that I did a bit of looking around on their site, and it's looking as if Leri's transmitter may be working - they mentioned in one of the videos that it had stopped shortly after she arrived in Africa, in a way that made it likely that something had happened to her - but now, even though the signals are a bit unusual for an osprey that age, there are signals, so they have their fingers crossed. Chicks from 2011 would normally spend this winter in Africa as well, and make their first flight back to Europe next spring, though they probably won't nest until at least the following year, when they are three or older.

Thank you, Trudi - and enjoy!

By the way, for those who don't follow this nest - the adults laid three eggs again this year, and the all hatched, but two of the chicks were victims of the weather - the worst summer in terms of rain in over 100 years. The surviving chick left on migration on September 3rd, and is already in Spain! You can follow his travels on the site I posted above. We wish Ceulan a safe journey, and a couple of winters full of warm tropical fish!

Here is some interesting information about Ospreys

Quote:
The osprey, like other daytime hunting (diurnal) birds of prey has excellent vision. We've probably all used the term "eagle eye" to denote someone with keen vision. The osprey's vision is one of his most important senses for hunting and reacting to danger. Like humans, an osprey focuses on objects through binocular vision (using both eyes to see). Unlike birds that have one on each side of their head and use each in isolation, the osprey's eyes are facing forward. This enables him to have great depth perception as he hovers searching for prey. Ospreys have more sensory cells in their eyes and can see objects at a distance up to three times better than a human. They are also able to discern colors. This helps to discern prey, and aids in reproductive behavior. Published by Albert Aunchman

Hello To all.
Urmas Sellis of the estonian Eagle Club & part of the ESLAT osprey team for Estonia & Latvia.
He is asking for our help.;

Kotkaklubi, Estonia's EAgle Club is requesting help from Italian bird-friends, particularly in Calabria.

On the Migration Map news we learned of the death of osprey Ilze, one of the ESTLAT ospreys. Her movements were recorded until October 26, when she had arrived in Falcone. Then, no further movement was recorded
See http://birdmap.5dvision.ee/index.php?lang=en

Osprey Ilze is tagged within ESTLAT Eagles project in Latvia. She moved southwards up to Sicily (after stopping over in Hungary) and then suddenly turned back to Italy. 26th October, she arrived to the place called Falcone in sparsely populated region of Calabria. From 29th October she is probably dead, because since that date the temperature sensor indicates the outside temperature. We look for helpers, who would be willing to go and check the place of possible perish. We were able with help of Elisabetta Bianconi to contact to the Rende branch of Italian League for Bird Protection (LIPU) and Roberto Santopaolo. He went with Antonio Mancuso to the site and found the Ospreys feathers. Unfortunately, the landscape of the place was very rough canyon, in addition to dense prickly shrubs and trees (look at pictures in the gallery of Ilze). It was not possible to look much around, so transmitter and the remnants of eagle remained undiscovered. Most likely it was a mammal, who consumed the body. However, the sender continues to send in the same area (not more as 20 m from the feathers found), and perhaps there are still someone who are willing to go there to search... However, the transmitter battery is discharging, ie it does not seem to be exposed to the light. Also it should be not in some lair, but on ground.

We are asking if forum members can help to find someone in that region who is willing to trek to this inhospitable, prickly place to look for the transmitter. Do you know any member, individual or a group who may be able to help?
Recovery of the transmitter is quite important due to the cost of replacing it.

Urmas will be able to give location details to the person who volunteers for this mission.

PLEASE if anyone has contacts in Italy please let me/ Urmas or looduskalender.ee know. You are all aware of the terrificly high cost of the transmitters,so f this one could be recovered The Eagle Club will be very grateful.
Like Hanckock The Eagle Club functions on donations only.
Thank you.
