Osprey's Rule

Reported over the weekend of May 7-8. In South East Washington DC, a parkway is being constructed along the Anacostia River. A pair of Ospreys took a liking to a crane. A perfect platform on which to build their nest with a close up view of the river. As they are a migratory bird, the law protects them from having their nest disturbed. The crane will remain inactive until the birds nesting season is complete. The construction company isn't too upset. They are just changing the order of their project and working at a different location. The wildlife ranger is quite pleased with the birds presence as it indicates that there are fish in the river again and the river is recovering from it's pollution. He also said there are several other pairs on the river. But, this pair has become famous. Lots of humans watching and photographing the pair.

The female arrived on the 26th of April, the male on the 29th,nestorations were started and the nest is a beauty. There is a male
intruder that has been disturbing the nesting season,
however the resident male and female have been trying to run him off.On the tenth of May the intruder stole a fish off the nest
that was obviously left by the
resident male for the female,it was upsetting to see where-as the female had been gone from the nesting site i gather due to
the disruption of the intruder,it has been difficult
for the resident male to deliver fish with the intruder alway's on his tail.I spent two early morn'in's at the site on the 11th and twelved
and the resident male did deliver a fish to momma,
that made me very happy, although i'm alarmed that after 14 day's with the resident male, there is still no egg at this nest,i'm hoping
thing's go well but we
all know what went down at Black-water so i have my finger's crossed.Jazzel,do you have info you could provide me to as when egg's
are earliest expected as
according to the info in this post, that would be greatly appreciated.

A nest that has a resident pair returning in good health from migration, should have eggs in two or three weeks. There are factors that delay egg laying, intruder issues are one. Very odd, the fish deliveries to the nest at this stage. Are you sure you don't have the resident male and intruder reversed? Intruders will bring fish to the nest, trying to 'steal' the female. The resident male will remove the fish. Also, it could be the intruder with the fish, being chase by the resident male.

Cal the cam was on late last season, so I have no nesting dates ...just 3 hatches, all three fledged....it's a beautiful nest.

Well Jazzel on the dates of those fish deliveries,i felt it was close to the time that the female would possibly
lay her first egg,so to me it appeared the
right time for the female to be provided to by the male resident. The intruder has a wing span that is definitely
up to a foot longer then the resident
male,so i have been able to tell them apart easily.Although we are getting a lot of fog lately and even with
binocular's and the distance i watch from,i'll
look more closely soon on a better lit day.I am very confident that it is the resident delivering fish thou, because when the intruder arrived on a nice sunny
day he went to the nest, took what was left of the trout in the nest and ate the whole thing and then
boogied off,if he was there to entice the female
he would have never eaten the whole fish, just to bring me up to the basics thou,in my time in Fresh-water
bay before the egg's were laid, the male would go fishing,
come back later, look after the nest and then the female would leave the bay and go off fishing herself, could
you Jazzel please provide me with the
info regarding this issue as the behavior before the egg's are laid, close to the time when the egg's are laid
and do both the female and male take
care of their own need's when it comes to fishing until the egg's hatch, all this info would help me work this
situation out a lot better and
i'll observe this site really closely and provide you with observations to help me thru this situation
happening at Middle Cove Beach,all
the info you provided is banked and i will do my best with your expertise to assess this situation,
thanks so much for the info,i
look forward to your next post regarding all that i have written.
