Thanks for the update, Gerard. It does sound as if they tried everything they could - I'm sorry it didn't work out. Sad Sad

Middle Cove Beach,up to Friday the 18th,no evidence of any chicks, pops brought in a stick,
momma took off
and landed on a branch, there was no fish delivery, she just pruned herself in the sun while
pops settled in on
the egg, egg's hopefully.Today the 19th i really expect a hatching,i stay to watch fish deliveries
and the curious
activity from mom and pops as they look down with excitement when they get a glimpse of a new
chick.At this point
none of that activity has happened yet.

PS-Concerning the Wabush osprey,Jazzel,i so agree with whats written that the osprey is a very hard bird
to rehabilatate,i've always wondered why Salmonier had every other bird but never a osprey, knowing
that it is wilder in that way is not hard to accept, actually it's a relief.I move past such ordeals quite quick,
i think the hard part was that the state of the bird was so different then the media story,in such a state
i was a bit perturbed that it was shipped in a container 500 miles, would have been better with a better assess-
ment that it could have been euthanized, but now thats history,i appreciate your words and follow your
great information on ospreys diligently, thanks Judy also,if Penelope ever visits her nest where she was born
i'm eager to know such news,i read your info that they like to set up no less then 15 miles from where they were born,
but i have a feeling while she matures, she'll be an intruder there soon.

Soph, I wish I had an answer!!! This is the "Buckeye" Osprey nest, located in Muskego, WI USA.

This is becoming a very disturbing season for North American ospreys!!! These are pics from yesterday. Clearly showing in the last pic, two adults....one with a fish. My pics from earlier today, show two dead nestlings, the one on the right may have been covered, or removed by one of the adults...the time/date stamps are on the pics. These nestlings are a sudden death at age, three weeks yesterday....hatch date 5/30. I also have a pic from 6/17 (not posted) showing a healthy nest, two adults and two nestlings. This is a very hard cam to follow, not only is it a very long refresh, 3 min. according to the site, but it's more like 30 minutes on a good day, often much longer Also the web site is slower than their cam in updating the nest I'll be looking for answers....this is similar to Panama City, except the the age....I wonder, if this is what we see in our few cams, what is happening to the majority of nests we can't observe??? Then there's the issue of failed nests, and no eggs on nests with nesting pairs.

I'll keep up on the Middle Cove pair to see if they are successful this year,
Really sad news
Soph9 as the nest was close to you and that definitely makes it harder to
take, and sad news at the new cam site
Jazzel.Must be hard on a mature breeding pair to take as birds will give
their lives to breed
and is such a powerful instinct, would be interesting to know if such events
would take time
for them to feel up to par again, like a hollow sense within their instinctual
makeup that
gets tangled somewhat by the failure of their most prized time, just a thought.
Instinctively we all
know they will move on and survive and repeat the cycle next year,Nothing is easy
in the world of nature
it appearsTragic news,sorry ladies..

Middle Cove Beach

I visited the nest the last two nights, one hour before sunset, and the male came in late
the first night,the
female was still resting on the bowl of the nest,it was dusk and i thought he had a fish
but i could not really
tell,he never went to the nest,he went to a dead wood and darkness shut down my
observations.Both nights before sunset
the female never ever got up to look down in the bowl. The second night with fingers crossed
which was last night,
the male never ever showed up,the female remained fastened to the bowl and no info on
whether a chick
is hatched. So i rose early am,drove ten kilometers from my house to the nest,it was 7 am,
there was one osprey
in the nest tucked in and another osprey on a dead wood eating a trout,do not know whether
it was the male or female, three minutes,
time is up and still without any info regarding any chicks i had to drive another 18 kilometers
to work.It could have been
the male eating but i observe from approximately 800 to 1000 feet away so the only reliable
evidence of a chick
would be a fish delivery, and momma feeding the chick or both adults on the sides checking
out the bowl looking down,
but up to now natta.

So sorry to hear about all the nests that are having trouble this year. I think it's especially hard to have a failure at a local nest, soph - especially without any idea what might have happened. Good luck with your nest, Gerard.

I finally got a glimpse of the illusive third chick at Lake Barkley, Kentucky - someone had posted a picture of all three on the 19th, and I've looked in several times since then and only seen two - but always Mom has been blocking/sheltering part of the nest, so I couldn't be sure how many there were. If you look closely, you can see the head of the third one under Mom in the first pic:

I like how the older chick is standing up and letting her opinion be heard! Grin
