Bev, yes I do information on the nest. Barb and I have been corresponding on the situation since the cam came back up and the nestling was missing.
Barb, sent me a email this morning with a pic from the nest, that pic is now posted on the "NESTING NEWS" on the cam site. To save time, I'm posting copies of Barb's emails and my reply. The nestling in your pics...so glad you're watching the cam...is likely not the youngest. The missing nestling, even if it was the oldest was not old enough to fledge. They did an extensive search, and couldn't find a nestling on the ground. If a nestling, was on the ground, and alive, the male would likely be guarding and feeding it, that makes locating easier.
This is the latest, today's emails:
Barb wrote:
I wonder if the dark spot in the nest is the third osprey all flattened out.
My reply:
Barb, you may be on to something!! I've been watching the nest this morning, the nestlings don't stand on that spot and there seems to what could be feathers moving in the wind.
A nestling at the Hilton Head, NC nest cam (2009) died on the nest at 34 days old, it had been bullied by it's siblings, so very likely died from dehydration/starvation. Most likely dehydration, it was only getting the tail end of the fish...not much fluid there....then there's the added stress from bullying. The adults didn't remove it from the nest...
Barb's reply:
Right, I noticed they weren't sleeping there either. One of the three was
skinnier than the other two for sure.
Barb's reference to the weight of the nestling is from the banding on 5/12...they were all weighed and measured...standard in all banding.
So far this appears to be a case of nest reduction...
