Thanks to PattiO from the Window-on-Wildlife Forum for introducing me to this nest, which has the first webcam ever set up on a Bald Eagle nest in Pennsylvania, and researching the information about the area.

Hays is a neighborhood in Pittsburgh, and lies southeast of the center of Pittsburgh along the Monongahela River. The nest is on a steep, wooded hillside overlooking the river. The pair reared one young chick in 2013, which was the first successful eagle nesting in the city in more than 200 years, according to game commission officials. The pair successfully raised three chicks (H2, H3 and H4) in 2014. Look for eggs in middle to late February.

2015 Nesting Season:

  • cam on: December 18 ,2014

  • eggs laid: First egg laid,Feb17, 2015 at 7:37pm

    Second egg laid Feb.20, 2015 at 4:40pm

  • sad news: One of the eggs broke March 13, and the second collapsed March 27; neither were viable. Host PixController reported that they received a very interesting message from one of their Facebook fans Susan Shearer. This was her message: "Wanted to give you some info I got from the Raptor Education Center that may be the reason the eggs failed...On Feb. 24th mom stood up and steam came off the nest ..after that the color of the eggs changed ...out of concern I messaged the Raptor center sent them pics of the eggs before the incident and after ..also sent them video of the steam coming off..they had concerns that there was too much moisture and that could cause bacteria that would harm the eggs being they were just a few days old...This makes sense to me"

Pittsburgh Hays camera re-install scheduled for Thursday!

December 17, 2014 —

Yay! Looks like we’ll have the Pittsburgh cam up again soon! They are reporting that the solar panels have been installed and the cameras are scheduled to be installed tomorrow. They have indicated that this year, there will be two cams. One on the ground for wide-angle and one in the tree. Looking forward to our second year with this cam!

---------------------------------

And another short update from PixController --

If you have not heard from the local TV News stations yet we will be installing the Hays bald eagle camera tomorrow. We hope to have it up and running by the early afternoon. Tomorrow morning we will post the new link for you to watch the cam when it is turned on.
