Humboldt Wildlife Care Center's eagle cam was funded by a grant from Sequoia Park Zoo (www.sequoiaparkzoo.net). and installed in collaboration with Dr. Peter Sharpe of the Institute for Wildlife Studies (www.iws.org) and canopy ecologist Jim Campbell-Spickler, who works with Humboldt State University.

HWF would like to thank them all for giving us another look into the lives of these magnificent birds!!! Special thanks again to Dr. Peter Sharpe for his dedication to bald eagles!!

The Humboldt Bay eagles, known only as Mr. and Mrs. HBE, are approximately 14/15 years old have been nesting together since 2006. They have successfully raised at least ten eaglets.

This is the third year for this cam. Canopy ecologist Jim Spickler said the tree, which is a Douglas Fir, is mostly dead above the nest, which forced him to hang the original camera at a slightly crooked angle in order to fully view the birds. After he knew how the nest was situated, the following year the feed was better with a re-adjusted cam. He doesn't think this nest will last more than another few years. Its getting heavy...and Douglas Fir rots quickly in this climate. The nest is 95 to 100 feet up in this tree. This pair's first nest is quite nearby in a Redwood. It has been there for at least 7 years and this "new" nest has been here for 5 years.

According to The Humboldt Wildlife Care Center, this is the first pair of eagles roosting on Humboldt Bay in decades.

The nest is on Humboldt Bay, but the Wildlife Care Center is keeping the exact location secret in order to protect the birds.

New cameras were installed for the 2013-2014 nesting season including a PTZ. See the links in post above.

Two very different things happened in 2014 at this nest ---

First--The eaglets were DNA tested for sex during the banding. Angel was found to be male and Mist was determined to be a female! The first thinking here was that both were male---surprise!!

Second--Both eaglets were seen on cam to have lesions near their eyes. During banding this was diagnosed as Avian Pox. They both had a mild case and both had totally recovered by the time they fledged. At the time it did cause a lot of concern.

From Sandra Hunt-von Arb -- Humboldt Bay Eagles

Here is a photo of E1's pox lesion on his Left eye.

E2's lesion was in almost the same location on the Right eye.
