The R F bald eagle nest is located North of Leesburg, on the Potomac River, a few miles north of George Washington's Mount Vernon home in Northern Virginia on a large horse breeding and training farm. We will not be divulging the exact location of the nest at the wish of the property and cam owner. This map shows the general location of the nest.

A little history of the nest --

This is their tenth of watching this pair. Typically, they have had two eaglets survive each year. One year, only one survived. As this is the third year with the camera. We have no idea how many eggs were laid in prior years. In 2013 there were two eggs and both eaglets successfully left the nest. In 2011, however, three eaglets survived, and after leaving the nest, spent a few weeks together before moving on!

Eagle Cam informed us that the original RF nest collapsed during the "Snowmageddon" in Feb 2010. This nest was built in the current tree near the old one and first used in 2011, thus this is 5th year for current nest.

In 2014 there was one surviving eaglet, Justice, who fledged successfully. The other two eggs that were laid each had their own tragedy. Egg #1 was lost very close to the hatch day when a frozen rabbit was accidently dropped on it. Egg #2 successfully hatched but tiny Liberty9 was lost at the age of 6 days to unknown causes.

The adult pair in this nest are known as Martha and George. Our poster MsO has provided the following pictures to help identify who is who in this nest. Grin

How to tell George and Martha apart? George's tail is heart shaped, Martha's goes straight across.

Thanks go to MsO for much of the information on this nest! Thank You

Camera turned on Oct 16 and both eagles were already working on the nest. They probably did not leave for the summer.

Oct 20 Both returned to the nest at dusk. Good to see George still has a heart shaped tail to help identify him.
