Nest History
This nest is at Xcel Energy's Fort ST Vrain Power Station in Platteville, Colorado. It is in the mountain time zone. The 6 foot nest has been used by a variety of eagle pairs. The cam was installed in 2003. The eagles have raised
3 chicks in 2006
2 chicks in 2007
3 chicks in 2008
3 chicks in 2009 The nest failed in 2009 Snowstorm and absent parent.
2 chicks in 2010 2 eggs, both hatched and both fledged.
2 chicks in 2011 2 of the 3 eggs hatched. One was inviable.
3 chicks in 2012 The nest failed in 2012 Middle chick was stuck and died of hypothermia. Storm of over 2" of rain in a short period of time caused the other 2 chicks to suffer hypothermia also.
3 chicks in 2013. Two of the chicks died at 15 and 18 days old, probably from hypothermia during a snowstorm that lasted 3 days; the remaining chick fledged successfully.
3 chicks in 2014. The middle chick was observed wheezing in early May, and died of an apparent respiratory illness about a week later, at about 5 weeks of age; The youngest also appeared to wheeze occasionally, but not as much - and fledged successfully, as did the oldest chick..

Eagles usually begin nestorations in early October. Eggs are usually laid mid to late February and hatch in late March. They have usually fledged by early June.

All streaming is out of the Raptor Resource operations in Decorah, Iowa. We thank them for streaming this nest for our viewing.

This is the area near Platteville, Colorado where the eagles built their nest. There are notes about this nest beginning in 2002, but the nest may have been here longer.

Gmabird tooks these pictures of the nest and nest area.

The eagles have been back at the nest for about a month. You will be able to see them up on the babysitting branch now that the top view gives us a view of that branch. The cams are new but no ptz. I usually find them on the nest in the morning around 8am mt. Then again in the late afternoon they will sometimes arrive. I will not be keeping a close eye on this nest until mid December since eggs are not laid until mid February. Please post and report as you desire.

October 28, 2014 It is a chilly morning at 36F.

One of the eagles, I suspect mom, spent the night on the nest. She was up when I tuned in at 6:36am. She called out several times to make contact but I did not hear an answer. She went to the babysitting branch at 6:49 and flew off at 6:56am.

9:49 I tuned in to see if there were eagles at the nest. One was calling softly. It moved over to 6 (tv) whining and then I could see the other eagle. There was a bit of a noisy fuss and the eagle retreated to the other side of the nest but I think it snatched some of the food the other had. It went up to the babysitting branch and I could see it eat whatever small morsel it had stolen. The other eagle continued to eat at 5 (tv). Then began to move sticks around a bit.
