HWF would like to welcome you to year five of our coverage of the Alcoa-Davenport eagle cam starring Liberty and Justice!!

We would like to thank Alcoa for providing us with this cam. It allows us to have a unique view, complete with it's own perch, so that we might peek into the lives of this beautiful pair of Bald Eagles.

About Alcoa Davenport Works, Iowa, USA---

Alcoa Davenport Works has a longstanding commitment to the environment
The plant has conducted annual briefings for local environmental groups for the past 20 years
The plant has reduced air emissions by over 97% since 1988
The eagles nesting at Davenport Works hatched and fledged a pair of eaglets in 2010 and a single eaglet in 2011 and triplets in 2012. In 2013, two eaglets fledged-- and last season in the spring of 2014 one eaglet named Rudy was fledged.

The plant installed the original camera in November 2010 and installed a new camera in October 2011. Another new camera was installed at the end of 2012. We lost this cam due to a lightning strike and a temporary one was installed on a rented lift which was taken off line in mid July of 2013.

Since then-in September of 2013- the original cam has been replaced and a second cam with a long distance look at the nest was installed. Together these two cams offer us a very different look into the lives of this eagle family.

A little information about the nest---

The nest is built in an oak tree near the Mississippi River near the Alcoa Davenport Works plant and is about 80 to 85 feet above the ground.

The pair of eagles who "reside" in this nest are beautiful Liberty, the female and handsome Justice, the male.

This nest was originally built in 2009 so it is still a relatively new nest
.
This pair does not migrate--they remain in the area of the nest all year.

This pair of bald eagles joined the Alcoa Davenport community in Iowa in 2009. They built their 7-foot nest on Alcoa's 400-acre facility in a tree near the Mississippi River. In the spring of 2010 they fledged a pair of eaglets and later that year we installed our first Eaglecam. In 2011 one eaglet named Freedom was fledged from the nest. Alcoa launched a new camera with improved video streaming for the 2012 season and more recently they replaced that cam with another brand new one for the 2013 season. This cam has been replaced as it was damaged and a second cam for long distance viewing was added for the 2013-2014 season.

Employees and the community helped name the eagle pair Liberty and Justice.

In the fall and winter Liberty and Justice use the nest to eat and to prepare the nest for the next season. Eagles nesting in Iowa typically lay eggs in late February or early March and the eggs hatch in late March or early April. The eaglets grow quickly and are ready to fly “fledge” in late May or early June. Alcoa is proud that their unwavering commitment to environmental sustainability is helping conserve precious natural resources.

An update today from Alcoa concerning the cams --

One Camera Back
We are slowly getting some things reconnected. The tree-top view camera is back online but without sound. We have been upgrading some of the power and fiber optic infrastructure near the nest. Hopefully we will have both cameras online by next week. We have some additional computer hardware on order that should improve the video quality of our feed. We hope to bring that online in November. We have seen both Liberty and Justice in the area the last couple of weeks. I'm sure with the leaves coming off the tree they are getting ready to begin their annual home improvement projects.

A note from Alcoa today --

Monday, November 03, 2014

Busy at the Nest
The activity is really picking up at the nest in the last few days. Lots of time working on bringing and placing new sticks. Hard to believe it is still three months until egg laying time. Both cameras are running well right now. We do plan some behind the scenes work on our computer hardware in the coming weeks. Hopefully we will not be off for long when we do that work.
