Pat (Cumbrian) of CHIL Eaglecam has completed the Class of 2014 ... its an awesome summary of all the Channel Island Eagle families complete with maps and pictures of the nesting territories ,... an excellent resource for all of us following these majestic families...click on link below

http://z7.invisionfree.com/CHIL_EagleCA ... topic=9193

Thank You Pat The Class of 2014 is a great resource and a wonderful tool for all of us to reference later on ... thanks again Clapping Big hugs

All of these nests are off the coast of California...so we follow Pacific Time here.

Posting Guidelines

We welcome all observations and discussions about eagles here and we ask all members to treat each other with mutual respect.

As there are four different families and nests that we are reporting on here please identify which nest you are referencing and the time the event occurred.

For continuity please use this video symbol to introduce your video Video Camera and the fish symbol Fish: to identify a fish delivery.

Please keep bold and color text to a minimum as the use of both is sometimes viewed as a form of intimidation so please keep it to a minimum thank you so much.

Please do not animate or alter screen captures that you share here.

This thread is devoted to documenting the behavior of the eagles so please do not share off topic items thank you..

Smilies are okay but are capped at four per post (less is preferred) and please do not use smilies in the body of the nest observations; thank you.

Please limit the pictures in each post to no more than a total of 150,000 bytes (150KB) and to avoid horizontal scrolling pictures or scaps (screen captures) may not exceed 500 pixels wide - though it's fine to post a 500-pixel-wide thumbnail that clicks to a much larger picture. Three captures per post is recommended.

Periodically we will tidy up this thread by deleting posts that are not directly related to maintaining an accurate journal of nest observations and/or eagle discussion.

We prefer that the Quote Button is not used on this thread...and if you must use it...because you are referring to something on a previous page...then take TEXT only...never captures or video; Thanks.

Hatch Timelines - What to Expect

Experience shows that the first egg often hatches around Day 38 and the second egg hatches a bit earlier than Day 38 as a result of the "cooling period" of the first egg thereby promoting a closer hatch of the eggs. Once all the eggs are laid then the birds generally incubate the eggs continuously. In 2014 Belle (NCTC Eagles) cooled the egg one night for 6 hours straight and we speculated it was because she had a third egg to lay, which turned out to be the case.

We look forward to another great season ... growing along side the Channel Island Bald Eagle families Wub and we look forward too and welcome your participation here hug

May you embrace all the "blessings and gifts" that surround you in your life ... let your spirit soar :-)

West End Family History

Meet the resident pair K91 Thunder and K01 Superman Wub

K91 and K01

Screen Capture by Mpmom

Many firsts for this new pair; including a new baby chick hatched on April 5, 2015 Wub

Summary of the 2015 Nesting Season

Superman K01 and Thunder K91 became a new pairing late in the 2014 season; as a result they did not produce any offspring in the 2014 season.
The long term resident female Lady Wray went missing late and after the 2013 Nesting Season ... RIP Lady Wray.
We are hopeful that this new pair K01 and K91 will have a successful nesting season in 2015 and with confirmation of a bonding that took place at the nest on Dec 29 2014 ... the 2015 nesting season appears to be off to a great start!

•adults return: This pair does not migrate they remain in the nest area all year long as there is food aplenty.

•intrusions:

•eggs laid: two; Feb 23 & Feb 26; Mar 26 2015; one egg broke; a dead chick carcass was visible; Mom ate the remains.

•hatched: - Remaining Egg Hatched - April 5 2015

•banding - May 28 2015 - Sadly the chick died shortly after being removed from the nest for banding; Dr. Sharpe was holding the 7+ Week (53 days) old chick in his arms when he passed away. No signs of stress were seen in the chick prior to its passing. A necropsy confirmed the chick died from an acute bacterial infection in the blood. The loss of a chick during banding had never happened before and it was quite a shock to Dr. Sharpe, the IWS team and all of us following these bald eagle families. A very sad loss for K91 Thunder and K01 Superman as this was their first nesting season together as a new pair. Soar High Soar Forever Free Lil One Red Heart

Pelican Harbor Family History

Summary of the 2015 Nesting Season - Nest was not used this year!

The Resident pair K26 and K10 have not been observed at the nest since the eagle cam came back on line (as of Dec 2014)! On Dec 31 2014 we heard adult eagle calls (see links below) but the resident pair continue to be absent from their nest, which may indicate they are working on yet another new nest.

Update - Pelican Harbor pair did not nest this year; we are hopeful for a better season next year for this pair!

Note Dr. Sharpe mentioned on chat in July that IWS may be relocating the PH cam equipment to the Sauces nest and also to the Fraser Point nest if TNC gives permission; TNC is The Nature Conservancy, which owns about 76% of Santa Cruz Island. When Dr. Sharpe was asked why the Fraser Point Nest his response was “ It would be a more relevant nest because it would be the nest of the first chick to hatch on the Channel Islands in over 50 years.” Dr Sharpe is referring to A-49 aka Princess Cruz who hatched on the PH nest in 2006 and is now paired with A-64 on the Fraser Point nest. So sadly there may not be a Pelican Harbor cam in 2016 ... We are already missing K26 and K10 ... and although it would be wonderful to watch A49 and A64 i cannot imagine not watching K26 and K10 ever again ... they were one of the first nesting pairs that i watched and observed since 2006!

Sauces Family History

Meet the Sauces Pair - A48 (F) & A40 (M) Wub

Screen capture by Mpmom

A-40 has lost both his wing-blings now but A-48 still has both of hers. Update; A-48 has lost her left wing-bling. It was noted by the observers on Nest Watch when she visited the nest on July 24th, 2015.

Summary of the 2015 Nesting Season - Nest Failed!

March 15, 2015. Sad News .. Posted on the IWS Facebook Page:

" It appears that the Sauces nest failed today. The egg likely broke midday, based upon the adults' behavior. Because a healthy, full-term chick would fill an egg, making it hard to break, it is likely that the egg was either infertile or the chick died early in development and the recent heat may have caused the rotting egg to explode. Although there is time for another clutch, we have not seen a pair lay another clutch of eggs after incubating more than a couple of weeks. Hopefully they will have better luck next year. "

•adults return: This pair does not migrate they remain in the nest area all year long as there is food aplenty.

•intrusions:

•eggs laid: Feb 7, Feb 10

March 15 2015 - Egg broke; nest failed. Not sure when the other egg broke. At the beginning of April (April 5) the birds did appear to be making a second attempt; lots of activity at their nest including mating; unfortunately there was no second clutch for this pair.
