Southwest Florida Eagle Cam Nest Notes
http://southwestfloridaeaglecam.tumblr.com/archive

Dick Pritchett Real Estate is excited to continue the live look into their Southwest Florida nest. We have two cameras that will film the birds 24/7 and stream live video directly to this site. Camera #1 is positioned six feet above the nesting tree and is equipped with night vision or infrared light, which emits no actual light. Nor does it make any noise. The birds do not see or hear anything coming from the camera. Camera #2 is located approximately 100 feet from the nest and has the ability to capture images of the nest action outside of Camera #1. Both cameras are environmentally friendly, non-intrusive and positioned to offer the best view of the nest and birds while preserving the pristine beauty of the nest and their surroundings.

2014-2015 Season:

Thank you Dick Pritchett Real Estate for installing, maintaining and running these cams on your property. This is a family owned and run business. The cam was first installed in early September, 2012.
This mature pair of bald eagles, Ozzie & Harriet, have been coming to this nest since they built it for the 2006-2007 season. Before building this nest in 2006, the pair had a nest on the opposite side of Bayshore Road, across the street. This location is now known as Eagle Landing. The old nest was deliberately killed by someone to get rid of the eagles nest.

Two eggs were laid November 26 & 29 in 2012
Both chicks fledged successfully - Hope & Honor.
Two eggs were laid Nov. 17 & 20 in 2013.
Only one chick fledged suddessfully - E4
E3 sadly passed on Feb. 2 at 41 days old.

Summary written by JudyB:
(2014 Eaglet Information Table link: http://www.judybeagles.com/eagles2014/e ... o_2014.htm)
"There was a heavy rain storm the night of January 10 when the chicks were about 3-1/2 weeks old, which appeared to disrupt the fishing, so less food was brought to the nest - which led to some rather brutal sibling rivalry as older E3 tried to keep E4 from eating, so E3 could get what food there was. This was during a period of rapid growth for the chicks, so E3 continued to grow rapidly, and E4's development paused for a couple of days - which made it harder for the now markedly smaller chick to get food. After 4 or 5 days, food deliveries increased, and the younger eaglet began to find ways to sneak around to the other side of the adult and get fed; by January 21 (when the chicks were about 4 weeks old), there was still quite a bit of rivalry, but E4 was being fed regularly, and began to grow; by January 28 (5 weeks old) both were close in size, though older E3 had many more dark feathers visible, and rivalry was much less; sometimes they were fed together, and other times they seemed to take turns. We hoped this would be the start of a peaceful time at the nest, but sadly that was not to be - by January 30 observers were noticing that the older eaglet E3 seemed less active, and I think E3 got up to join a feeding only once on January 31, though food was brought to the nest several times and E4 ate well. E3 was moving around occasionally on February 1, and had some small poop shots, but didn't eat; she died at 4:53 am on February 2. There are several theories as to the cause of death, including poisoned food, a fungal or viral infection, the fact that more of the older chick was exposed to the rain January 29-30 (they were too big to both fit under the adult, and the younger, less-feathered eaglet was covered more than the older eaglet) - but it's unlikely that we'll ever know. Rest in peace, E3 - and E4 - best wishes for a long and happy life."

The old nest that was across the street is labeled LE-26A and had been monitored.

OLD NEST - 1990 - 2006
The pine tree previously used by the nesting pair of Bald Eagles for more than a decade died. An unknown individual knocked off the bark in a ring around the tree which severs the roots from the needles and starves the tree. The county had monitored the nest since 1990 and recorded 23 eaglets, confirmed fledglings.
