Thanks to CAL04 for bringing this cam and the sister cam at the Dunrovin Ranch to our attention. The nest is located in Missoula, Montana, on the Clark Fork River and and thank you HWF for featuring it on your web site along with a nest thread where we can post our observations, scaps and videos......giving us the opportunity to learn about these beautiful birds....

The AXIS P5534-E camera, computer infrastructure and internet connection were donated by the Riverside Health Care Center. Real time High Definition TV - available in Riverside HCC's lobby - was donated by Raptors of the Rockies. Logistic support provided by Northwestern Energy. This camera is also supported by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and their Bird Cams Project.

On the left side of this cam you will find all the information that you need..FAQ, Timeline,Project History, Heavy Metal Studies, Lab Facilities, People...

This thread is for scaps, videos and observations of the Osprey..Please limit smileys to three per post....Thank You and Enjoy!

As a courtesy to viewers with slower internet connections, please limit the pictures in each post to no more than a total of 150,000 bytes (150KB), and please do not post animations (though it's fine to post a link to them). To avoid horizontal scrolling, please do not post pictures that are more than 500 pixels wide - though it's fine to post a 500-pixel-wide thumbnail that clicks to a much larger picture. The forum attachment software conveniently handles that task - so you can attach larger pictures, and a properly-sized clickable image will appear in your post. The preferred format for pictures is JPEG (.jpg), and three 500-pixel-wide JPEGs should be under the 150KB limit.

Hi Bev,

I have some information for you on fledgling fishing. I included links to hacking…hacking proves that fledglings don't need adults to learn to fish. Also, the links to Rob Bierregaard's websites, tons of information, you just need to navigate through all his drop down menus. I'll send more links, but this should keep you busy for now. I also highly recommend these books, A Life Of Ospreys by Roy Dennis (Amazon), The Rutland Water Ospreys by Tim Mackrill (www.bloomsbury.com), The Scottish Ospreys by Phillip Brown (Amazon).

Hugs Linda

When osprey chicks hatch, they are covered in white down with brown streaks on the face, back, and wings. This is replaced by charcoal-colored down after approximately 10 days. Feathers begin to replace the down at approximately two weeks. By one month after hatching, chicks have reached 70 to 80% of the adult size. Osprey chicks fledge between 48 and 76 days old. Generally, chicks in migratory populations fledge sooner than those in non-migratory populations. After fledging, young ospreys begin to hunt on their own. However, they often continue to return to the nest to receive food from their parents for two to eight weeks after fledging. Because ospreys migrate individually, juvenile ospreys must be fully independent of their parents by the time the southward migration begins. (Poole, 1989; Poole, 1994)

Montana Osprey Cams
March 11
Hi all,
Another three weeks--maybe less--until the ospreys will return to the Missoula area. This afternoon we replaced the camera at the Hellgate Canyon nest site with help of Dale Beavers (Garden City Tree Service in Missoula). We are now able to point the cam up about 20 degrees - so we can see the top of Mount Jumbo to the north (see screen shot) or the owl and Stanley's favorite eating spot to the west ...
The resolution of this cam is greater, although this may not be noticeable online. Most importantly, we should be able to watch our beloved raptors without camera problems for another few years!

wave Hi Bev, getting excited to see Iris and Stanley. Hope he arrives a little earlier this year! We are on a wonderful family vacation in California but can't start the day without checking on my favorite nests!
