Thanks to PattiO from the Window-on-Wildlife Forum for introducing me to this nest, which has the first webcam ever set up on a Bald Eagle nest in Pennsylvania, and researching the information about the area.

Hays is a neighborhood in Pittsburgh, and lies southeast of the center of Pittsburgh along the Monongahela River. The nest is on a steep, wooded hillside overlooking the river. The pair reared one young chick in 2013, which was the first successful eagle nesting in the city in more than 200 years, according to game commission officials.

2014 Nesting Season:

  • eggs laid: February 19, 4:45 pm; February 22, 4:18 pm; February 25, seen 6:39 pm
  • hatched:....March 28 @ 2:36pm: March 30 @ 7:17am: April 2 @ 4:45pm......
  • Branched
  • Fledged H3 @ 10:14am June 20 ..82 days old; H2 fledged June 21 at 8:45pm...85 days old (maybe fell or it was on purpose); H4 fledged on June 27 at 10:14 am (86 days old)
  • Last seen on the nest: a visit in mid-July was reported on Facebook, and a local observer saw two and maybe all 3 juvies flying in early August.

These eagles have already faced some challenges.

The evening of February 27, a raccoon came into the nest and tried to take one of the eggs, but was fortunately driven off by the female, who was incubating at the time. Here's a link to a video by PixController of the event - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RWJfTaO-Wz0.

Also on the 27th, another raptor, probably an immature eagle but maybe a hawk, came onto the nest in the afternoon and was driven off by the female. PixController also has a video of that - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UfVm4bLOLvg

Then there was snow - this picture from earlier today is also courtesy of Sherri:

This picture is from about 9:20 pm - all three eggs are visible, and looking OK.

This is incredible. Wishing Ma and Pa Pittsburgh Hays success in protecting their three precious eggs from harm. I'm sending these videos to David Hancock. He was quite intrigued with the screenshots I sent him of the raccoon in the Delta 2 nest but was wishing that someone had made a video of that.
