Video: Pacific Loons Build Nest in Alaska

May 14, 2010: Pacific Loons have started building a nest in Anchorage, Alaska. These loons. They normally lay two eggs (one egg if its a replacement nest). Incubation is done by both parents and lasts 23 25 days. \

Eggs laid May 20 and May 22

Eggs hatched June 17 and June 18.
Second chick disappeared -- the cam host speculates that it may have been snatched by an eagle.

I found this interesting bit of information on the loon cam page.

Sticking to Water

May 19, 2010 -
The Pacific Loon is strictly marine except during its brief three-month breeding season when it nests on freshwater ponds throughout much of the arctic and subarctic tundra and taiga regions.

ONE EGG ! (or the cap of a mushroom Puzzled:dunno: )
10:27 am
Tuned in the cam to see what looks like an egg in the bowl but it doesn't look very smooth.
It's also lighter in color than what the Common Loon eggs are. No idea if they have different colored eggs... going to look.
No sign of a loon yet.
The nest has definitely had more work done to it .

ETA: According to the Stokes Field Guide the eggs should be brown with dark spots..... a bit difficult to say exactly what color that is in the sunshine but it looks brownish.

Also, I checked the Pacific Loon forum and they have confirmed it is an egg. Left thumb up

It's amazing how long they leave their eggs unattended.

They have switched to a night vision camera so the nest is no longer showing in color during the day. Hope they switch it back again.

Interesting fact: Pacific Loons are smaller than Common Loons. The chicks will not ride on their parents backs the way Common Loon chicks do.
