WELCOME TO THE 2013/2014 SEASON!

Welcome to this thread. Most of the pictures posted early on were of Ma & Pa Stalashen and their offspring but we have discovered other nests so pictures/comments are posted of them.

Please stop by and say Hi. If you visit any of the nests in Sechelt you are welcome to post comments and pictures here.

Stalashen Nest

We have been watching this nest in Sechelt from our living room, through a telescope and binoculars. My husband saw that the nest was being used several years ago but we didn't see the eagles there again until 2008. We have been following it ever since. We have talked to a few of the people living close to the nest and they said that it has been there over 20 years. Unfortunately, it did blow down in July 2009 after a windstorm but we are happy to tell you that the eagles have built a new nest. When the nest blew down one of the eaglets had branched and the 2nd one was fine also, the eagles fed them on a branch before they fledged. We look through our telescope at this nest which is about a mile and a half away. We can only see them clearly in the morning or evening due to the glare from the water and thermal interference.

Nests in Sechelt:

1. Stalashen Nest -

2009 - 2 eaglets not named. Fledged.
2010 - 1 eaglet Sunny. Fledged.
2011 - 1 eaglet Bluster June 21 Bluster branched. Fledged.
2012 - 1 eaglet Pacer June 27 Pacer branched. Fledged.
2013 - 1 eaglet Hydan June branched. Fledged.
2014 - 2 eaglets branched ..... Fledged.

2. Chapman Nest located on Sunshine coast Highway (Highway 101) - no confirmation of eaglets this year 2011. No confirmation of eaglets 2012. We see these eagles fly over our house and head down to the nest which isn't far from the water.
2013 ?
2014 2 eaglets fledged.

3. Kinnikinnick Park Nest- no eaglets seen, not being used right now 2011. No eaglets seen Ma & Pa spotted in trees near the nest July 2012.
2013 Eagles were seen November 21 and in December. Nov 21st I was told by a neighbour that they were building a new nestů.. very close to the old one.

4. Porpoise Bay Nest (blew down but we will have to look to see if they rebuilt - I did see eagles flying there a couple of weeks ago). Eagle seen flying in the bay January 2012.
2013

5. Seaview Nest (it is close to Seaview Lane) on Highway 101 this is in West Sechelt - 2011 - 2 eaglets seen. No eagles seen there January 1, 2012, Adult in the nest June 2012.
July 26, 2012 one eaglet/juvie spotted on the edge of the nest.

Two adults spotted in the perch tree nearby January 1, 2012.

2013 - Unfotunately this eagles' nest tree was topped! I spotted this in February 2013. Mitigation process supposedly in the works!

October 5 2013 Sandra,stim posted:.......

Woohoo, both Stalashen adults in the nest tree when I dropped by today! No one visible at the marsh nest today nor last Sat when I looked. click x2 to enlarge.

On arriving at Stalashen it looked like 1 adult was brooding.

On walking to the other side of the tree I could see they were both on branches above the nest.

A lot of calling started by them both, making me think "intruder alert". I couldn't see anything to call about. Maybe they were complaining about me. This is the higher adult.

The calling was the music I've been waiting for. Grin

Thank You stim great pictures!

waveIt was too nice a day to not get out and try to find some eagles. I headed to Chaster but still have not timed my visits with eagle sightings. I did however try to find the nest mentioned to me on a corner by the stop signs. A lady who lives there doesn't know about any nest. I did find one at the very top of an evergreen looking too small and fragile to be an eagles' nest. I've often seen a red tailed hawk in the immediate area so perhaps a hawks' nest?

Sorry that you didn't get to see any eagles at Chaster Sandra. I'm not sure what type of nest that is.Puzzled

We see Ma or Pa or sometimes both in the Stalashen nest pretty well daily now.Grin

Looking out of our living room window yesterday we saw flocks of seagulls flying around and in the water - hundreds of them.
