Millennium Trail Eagle's Nest - Whitehorse, Yukon
(Whitehorse is in the Pacific time zone)

September 12, 2016

Although we have no camera on this nest at the moment, HWF member Icamel has been very kindly posting ongoing links to photos of this nest at various stages of the chicks' growth. Thank you Icamel for all the links to these wonderful photos, it is very much appreciated..

With that said, until such time, as hopefully, one day there will be once again a camera on this nest, we will carry on with the 2016/17 season HERE .

March 26, 2016

At this point there is no live cam; however, there are a number of photos that have been posted showing the eagles for the 2016 season starting HERE

March 23, 2015 - Message from Laura at Atco Electric:

"Unfortunately Chris we will not be turning on the camera this year as the picture and quality of the video is very poor due to the nest location. We will be posting photos to the live stream account and our youtube account as we receive them." Thanks to MsO for bringing this email forward.

Coverage for the 2015 season starts here

2015 Season Timeline:

  • Eagles first seen at the nest:

  • Eggs Laid: Three eggs were laid - First egg was confirmed in the nest March 30

  • Hatched: All 3 eggs hatched - the first week of May

  • Fledged: one by July 19 (last update from Yukon Electric); photos by Arbitrage suggest that at least one of the others had fledged by July 30 and all were looking ready so the third probably fledged soon afterwards if it hadn't already

  • Last seen at the nest:

The following announcements have been posted on the Yukon Electrical Co. web site:

August 8, 2014

Camera shut down

It looks like all our eagles have left the nest, although they are being spotted occasionally. We will shut the camera down today (4:00 pm PST Friday, August 8) for the season. Thanks for sticking with us during our location change, lets hope our eagles will move back to the other nest for next season. ATCO Electric Yukon will also be looking to upgrade the camera over the off season so we can get better views of either nest. Thanks to all our supporters that hung in there this year!!

Apr 18, 2014

Old Camera has shut down for the season

"A notice to all followers, the Yukon Eagles have decided not to return to this nest for the 2014 season. We do know that the eagles are nesting right across the street and we will be keeping an eye on them over the summer, so watch for updates and photos. Thanks for all your support and we hope we are back next year."

March 31, 2014

There is an announcement this morning from the Electric Co. The eagles are preparing a new nest across the road from the one they used last year. They can see the new nest from the parking lot and are taking pictures. The biologist says no eggs yet.

Thanks to Yukon Electrical for making this cam available!

2013/2014 Nesting Season:

The northern eagle tends to lay their eggs approximately one month later than our southerly BC eagles so look for eggs about mid April.

  • Eggs Laid: Egg #1 approx Apr 3, Egg #2 & 3 not known but likely within the next 5 or 6 days.

Last year the parents could be identified by the black mark on their head. However, the marks may not be visible this year. Current scaps will be posted when they arrive back at the nest for the 2014 season.

Afternoon Friends wave

This article was posted today on CBC news....

The eagle webcam near a Whitehorse campground was so popular last year that the Yukon Electrical Company is doing it again, starting today.

Bald eagles have been nesting at the roadside pullout near the Robert Service campground for years.

It's always been a great spot to observe the majestic birds, but last year Yukoners and viewers around the globe had the chance to get a close-up view of the avian family.

Yukon Electrical, with the advice of EDI Environmental Dynamics, set up a webcam to watch over the nest.

By the end of the season, the site had logged over a million visitors, from all over Canada and across the world.

“It far exceeded any expectations we had,” says Laura Carlson, a senior communications adviser for Yukon Electrical.

Season 2 of the eagle cam goes live at noon local time today.

It’s earlier than last year, but many viewers of the webcam said they wanted to watch as the eagles got ready for the season.

So far, “there does appear to be some activity in terms of rebuilding the next and preparing it for the season,” says Anne McLeod, a biologist with EDI Environmental Dynamics.

At least one eagle was seen at the site as early as January.

“We suspect it might be the dad from last year, but we can’t say for sure,” McLeod says.

Last year, eggs were laid in about the second week of April. They hatched in mid-May, and viewers were able to watch the young in the nest up until they made their first flight. The young eagles continued to visit the nest until the end of September.

Yukon Electrical originally got involved with the nest a few years ago by erecting a utility pole at the site when the eagles’ nest was blown out of a tree.

“Our crews and our staff have just sort of adopted it,” making repairs when needed, says Carlson. “It’s been a real part of the way we give back to the community.”
