I'm sharing this rather scary article written by Bob Anderson concerning our beautiful Decorah pair ~~

Frigid winter threatens Decorah eagle eggs

Two more eggs expected by the end of the week --

The Decorah eagles, who laid their first egg Sunday, face their most challenging nesting season as they take turns trying to keep their eggs warm in subzero weather

"I’m very worried. In all my years I’ve never seen eagles lay eggs in subzero weather before,” said Bob Anderson of Decorah, director of the Raptor Resource Project, the not-for-profit organization that developed the nest cam that’s viewed on millions of computer screens each year.

“There’s nothing we can do but cross our fingers,” he said.

ETA---The temperature at the nest is only 5 degrees as I post this!! Sad

Since we are all so concerned about the terrible cold temperatures and their effect on the eggs I thought this article from RRP was very informative and interesting. ~~

Wednesday, February 26, 2014 -- Eggs and Cold Weather

Everyone is worried about the eggs in Decorah. Iowa is facing extremely cold temperatures in the weeks to come. While there have been other cold years – 2008, for example, had sub-zero temperatures into early March – this looks like one for the record books. We can’t guarantee that the eggs won’t freeze, but I thought I’d talk a little bit about eggs and cold damage.
