Welcome to year four of the Alcoa-Davenport eagle cam starring Liberty and Justice!!

Alcoa-Davenport eagle cam link~~~http://www.alcoa.com/locations/usa_dave ... glecam.asp

(Both of the cams for this nest are available at the above link)

We would like to thank Alcoa for providing us with this cam. It allows us to have a unique view, complete with it's own perch, so that we might peek into the lives of of this beautiful pair of Bald Eagles.

About Alcoa Davenport Works, Iowa, USA---

Alcoa Davenport Works has a longstanding commitment to the environment
The plant has conducted annual briefings for local environmental groups for the past 20 years
The plant has reduced air emissions by over 97% since 1988
The eagles nesting at Davenport Works hatched and fledged a pair of eaglets in 2010 and a single eaglet in 2011 and triplets in 2012!
The plant installed the original camera in November 2010 and installed a new camera in October 2011. Another new camera was installed at the end of 2012. We lost this cam due to a lightning strike and a temporary one was installed on a rented lift which was taken off line in mid July of 2013.

Since then-in September- the original cam has been replaced and a second cam with a long distance look at the nest has been installed. Alcoa does not have the equipment to stream both cams at the same time but may have that capability soon.

A little information about the nest---

The nest is built in an oak tree near the Mississippi River near the Alcoa Davenport Works plant and is about 80 to 85 feet above the ground.
The pair of eagles who "reside" in this nest are beautiful Liberty, the female and handsome Justice, the male.
This nest was originally built in 2009 so it is a relatively new nest.
This pair does not migrate--they remain in the area of the nest all year.

This pair of bald eagles joined the Alcoa Davenport community in Iowa in 2009. They built their 7-foot nest on Alcoa's 400-acre facility in a tree near the Mississippi River. In the spring of 2010 they fledged a pair of eaglets and later that year we installed our first Eaglecam. In 2011 one eaglet named Freedom was fledged from the nest. Alcoa launched a new camera with improved video streaming for the 2012 season and more recently they replaced that cam with another brand new one for the 2013 season. This cam has been replaced as it was damaged and a second cam for long distance viewing has been added for the 2013-2014 season.

Employees and the community helped name the eagle pair Liberty and Justice.

In the fall and winter Liberty and Justice use the nest to eat and to prepare the nest for the next season. Eagles nesting in Iowa typically lay eggs in late February or early March and the eggs hatch in late March or early April. The eaglets grow quickly and are ready to fly “fledge” in late May or early June. Alcoa is proud that their unwavering commitment to environmental sustainability is helping conserve precious natural resources.

For the 2013-2014 season-----

* Eagles first seen --- These eagles generally do not leave the nest area.

* Eggs laid --- 1st egg -- Feb. 23 ~~ 2nd egg -- Feb 27, 5:30PM

One of the eggs was unfortunately broken on March 16th

* Eggs hatched --- Our lone egg hatched on April 2, 2014

* Eaglet named --- The name chosen by a huge vote is ~~ Rudy

* Eaglet branched --- Rudy first branched over the weekend of June 14/15

* Eaglet fledged --- Possible fledge on June 22nd--81 days--have seen nothing official but Rudy is gone and flying

* Last seen --- That cams were down for quite sometime--by the time they were back no eagles have been seen. That being said, the last time they, including Rudy, were seen by anybody was on July 18th.

Changing Colors
It is a beautiful day at the nest. The colors in the trees are really starting to change. That means it won't be too long before the leaves are gone and our next "eagle" season will begin. I did spot one parent and what appeared to be a pelican soaring in the distance this afternoon.

Some of you have asked about the second camera. It is installed. We just don't have all the equipment in yet to be able to stream both feeds. Hopefully we will get there in the next couple of weeks. As for the current camera, it is zoomed out as far as it goes.
