African Wildlife Species ID threads, Charters
This thread contains the Bird Species Indices ONLY from the old forum.

Click here for: Old Bird Species ID and Index

For the Species ID threads,
Just photos from the cams are preferred and an ID. A simple description are also wanted, IE: Waterbuck has the white circle around their tail. A reference link(s) must be added to provide the source(s) of information. An older, less clear photo on an ID may be replaced when a more current photo is posted on a cam thread.

Bird ID Index ~ Part 1 - Bird Groups (Use this link if you do not know the name -- it will narrow your search)

Bird ID Index ~ Part 2 - Alphabetical
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The birds in this ID thread are identified by their current name from "Roberts Birds of Southern Africa, 7th ed." (Birds in Southern Africa, http://www.birdsinsa.com/). Austin Roberts (1883-1948), a native of South Africa, first published his "Birds of South Africa" in 1940. It has continued to be updated to include Southern Africa. If the name of the bird has changed, the old name from the 6th ed. of Roberts is also given. We have included the scientific or Latin name for the bird as well as the Roberts unique identification number for the bird. If you wish to do an internet search for more information on a specific bird, having the Latin name and/or the Roberts No. should help narrow your search. The Roberts No. groups the birds in a family with a similar range of numbers, so if the bird is similar to the one you are looking for, look for other birds with a Roberts No. which is close. A good illustration is found on the Djuma website's Bird Gallery (http://www.djuma.com/gallery_bird.php), which lists the most common birds by their Roberts No. for the Game Reserve. This list was made before the 7th ed. was published.
This is the first index from the 'old' forum:
Click here for: Old Bird Species ID and Index
This index to the Bird IDs is in two parts. The first part is by Bird Groups with the page number. If you don't know the name of a bird, this will help narrow it down. If the bird is wading in water or around the edge of a waterhole or dam, look in Group 2 and/or 3. If the bird is running around on the ground, start with the Terrestrial Group 4 and/or seed eaters. If it is a smaller bird sitting in a tree, try the insect-eaters (Groups 9 & 10). Of course, since this is the Hancock Wildlife forum, all the raptors/birds of prey are grouped together in Group 5.
The second part of the index is an alphabetical listing with the page and group numbers. Use the "Go To Page" at the top right of this page.
