WELCOME TO THE 2014 SEASON OF THE HALIFAX OSPREY NEST

Thank you N.S. Power and the Halifax Museum of Natural History
for this cam and thank you HWF for featuring it on your website along with a nest thread where we can post our observations, scaps and videos......giving us the opportunity to learn about these beautiful birds.....

In 2008 Nova Scotia Power and the Nova Scotia Museum of Natural History launched the Osprey cam to track the family of Ethel and Oscar and their offspring.. after nesting on a utility pole, power line technicians moved the nest to a safe location where the Osprey have returned to each spring.. for the protection of the birds the actual location of the nest is not released.

Scap by Irish Eyes......

This thread is for the discussion, observations, s'caps and videos of the Osprey.. No enhanced scaps...three smileys per post.....Thank you and enjoy !

.As a courtesy to viewers with slower internet connections, please limit the pictures in each post to no more than a total of 150,000 bytes (150KB), and please do not post animations (though it's fine to post a link to them). To avoid horizontal scrolling, please do not post pictures that are more than 500 pixels wide - though it's fine to post a 500-pixel-wide thumbnail that clicks to a much larger picture. The forum attachment software conveniently handles that task - so you can attach larger pictures, and a properly-sized clickable image will appear in your post. The preferred format for pictures is JPEG (.jpg), and three 500-pixel-wide JPEGs should be under the 150KB limit...

I asked Jazzel ..our Resident Expert on Osprey for some educational links on Osprey... I will post them here so all of us can refer to them..... with much thanks to Jazzelhug

Hi Bev,

I have some information for you on fledgling fishing. I included links to hacking…hacking proves that fledglings don't need adults to learn to fish. Also, the links to Rob Bierregaard's websites, tons of information, you just need to navigate through all his drop down menus. I'll send more links, but this should keep you busy for now. I also highly recommend these books, A Life Of Ospreys by Roy Dennis (Amazon), The Rutland Water Ospreys by Tim Mackrill (www.bloomsbury.com), The Scottish Ospreys by Phillip Brown (Amazon).

Hugs Linda

When osprey chicks hatch, they are covered in white down with brown streaks on the face, back, and wings. This is replaced by charcoal-colored down after approximately 10 days. Feathers begin to replace the down at approximately two weeks. By one month after hatching, chicks have reached 70 to 80% of the adult size. Osprey chicks fledge between 48 and 76 days old. Generally, chicks in migratory populations fledge sooner than those in non-migratory populations. After fledging, young ospreys begin to hunt on their own. However, they often continue to return to the nest to receive food from their parents for two to eight weeks after fledging. Because ospreys migrate individually, juvenile ospreys must be fully independent of their parents by the time the southward migration begins. (Poole, 1989; Poole, 1994)

Jazzel post

This is bonding. The pair are confirming their bond from last season.

Mating, you will see the female's tail up.

Possessive, you will see a quick on and off by the male, and other indications off territory disputes.

April 5, 2014.......

I wrote Jeff and asked him about the cam for this nest........ here is his response

We have not formally worked out a date yet so there is no update at this point. I assume it is happening again

I am sure it will happen. We have to wait on NSP for word on the cam and from Government IT that run the back end. We are just the front facing part of the operation. I would assume we will know next week..

All the best!

Jeff
