7:00 p.m. June 5th: Another feeding...and look how big they are getting! With plenty of food to go around, the biggest eyas was in a food coma before the others had finished eating. Titter

I checked in this morning (about 8:30AM MST) and the poor parent looked so frustrated, wanting to nestle all the eyasses underneath them but 1) they're all spread out and 2) once they would get one underneath them, the one that was already there would pop out. They're just getting too big and they just won't all fit anymore! (which of course is a good thing Smile)

I do have to say though, the little guy at the edge of the box has had me nervous a couple times this morning. I know there's the lip there, but still....nerve wracking.

8:50 a.m. Yes...the oldest eyas seems very curious to look over the edge this morning! Nerve-wracking, yes!

It's funny how s/he has found a way to get cool by laying in the shade of the lip edge.
The other three finally settled down once they found a combination of shade and snuggling underneath the parent. That morning sun must be bright and uncomfortably warm as it streams into the nest box.

I got this capture of the brood finally settled down--the oldest eyas lying spread-eagle in the foreground is somewhat comical Grin

8:54 a.m. The parent left the other three to go check on the eyas sleeping at the edge of the nestbox, and tried to gather it back with the others, but the chick seems determined to stay where it is! Another try a few minutes later, but once again, the eyas won't budge...and yet another try. It seems the oldest just can't figure out how to find more shade, other than the strip along the nest box.

9:01 a.m. The parent returns to try to shelter the chick, pulling it away from the nest box edge, then returns to the other three. Once more, the eyas goes to the edge of the box to stand in the shade--which is narrowing as the sun rises.

9:39AM MST. The eyass finally let the parent give it a little shelter.

BTW: Current Temp in Salt Lake City is 72°F with "a few clouds"

10:10AM MST

Looks like all the eyasses are now successfully back in the shade in the corner of the box (though the parent is still providing some shade for the one).
Thankfully, another hour or two and that back edge (the right edge as we look at the camera) will start to shade up and that should help things cool down a bit.

Another slightly amusing morning as when I first opened the cam, the parent was having quite the difficult time stepping and maneuvering around the four eyasses.

Looks like there's still a bit of carcass (maybe) next to the parent from a breakfast as well as a lot of feathers (probably a pigeon or dove?)

7:58AM MST Current SLC Temp: 50°F Partly Cloudy
